Trying to clean the ear canal with earwax is a very common situation in society. Experts pointed out that recently published scientific studies show that the habit of using earwax may have negative consequences. Ear Nose and Throat Diseases Specialist, Op. Dr. Ahmet Kızılağaçlı gave information about cleaning earwax (plug).
Earwax should not be cleaned with ear cleaning sticks
Dr. Ahmet Kızılağaçlı, ''Earwax cleaning should not be done with cotton sticks, known as ear cleaning sticks, or other foreign objects inserted into the inner part of the ear. Ear cleaning performed through such procedures causes earwax to be pushed into the inner part. At the entrance of the ear canal, in the area where the hairs are located, a natural dark yellow or light brown secretion called cerumen is produced by special oil glands in the skin. This secretion has properties that protect the ear canal, lubricate and protect against microbes. In fact, frequent cleaning and destruction of this natural body secretion, which should not be eliminated by cleaning, causes drying and itching in the ear canal. '' he stated.
Dirt is thrown out by itself over time
Even if the ear canal is never cleaned, it is thrown out by itself over time, noted Dr. Kızılağaçlı said, "The ear canal often becomes clogged as a result of people pushing the cerumen deep with cotton swabs during ear cleaning. Wiping the ear canal entrance with a piece of cotton is sufficient to clean the cerumen that is expelled spontaneously. Inserting objects such as cotton swabs, napkins, or towels into the ear canal will only push the cerumen deeper and cause clogging and should not be done. Ear candle application or ear sticks used at home do not clean the ear because the earwax, which is the ear secretion, does not form in the inner part of the ear. "Cleaning methods performed in this way cause the plug, which is thrown towards the outer part of the ear, to be pushed further into the ear," he said.
