Our country is an endemic region in terms of thyroid diseases. This disease is more common especially in people of Black Sea origin. The thyroid gland is located just below the larynx. If it enlarges for various reasons, it is called "Goiter". The most common reason why goiter is common in our country is the lack of iodine. Iodine is necessary for the functioning of the thyroid gland. When iodine decreases in the body, the thyroid gland grows in order to retain iodine. As it grows, it secretes enough hormones and there is no thyroid hormone deficiency in the body. The treatment is to eat a diet rich in iodine. Iodized salts are recommended. Things that enlarge the thyroid gland, such as kale and cornbread. foods are prohibited.
Hypothyroidism is the underactivity of the thyroid gland. It has symptoms such as constipation, dry skin, hair loss, tendency to sleep, and weight gain. When the thyroid gland does not work during pregnancy and is not treated, a disease called cretinism, in which mental retardation is at the forefront, occurs in the baby. For this reason, thyroid tests are requested at the first examination. If diagnosed, treatment is started as soon as possible. Because most people live without knowing that they have a thyroid disease. Sometimes, a disease called Hashimoto's thyroiditis due to autoimmune causes is encountered. In this disease, the thyroid gland appears spongy on ultrasound. Lifelong use of thyroid medication This is the required condition.
  Hyperthyroidism is the overactivity of the thyroid gland. It causes excessive sweating on the skin, palpitations, and weight loss. It does not harm the baby. Only if these symptoms impair the quality of life of the mother, medication must be started.
   Detection of a mass in the thyroid gland. In case of pregnancy, a biopsy is taken and sent for examination.
