After a long holiday, schools open on Monday. So tomorrow...
As a mother who sends her child to primary school for the first time, I am in a sweet excitement like every parent. My child will learn to read and write, and will be able to read the story "Little Red Riding Hood" that I have been reading to him for years. It's like kindergarten was a joke, but it's real. It seems like it's time to take on the responsibilities and challenges of life. It's like my little girl has grown up... The years will pass by in the blink of an eye, and next thing I know, she started university. Such emotional excitement...
I hope it will be a good year; For us parents, our beloved children and our valuable teachers. I need to write this article both to share my feelings and to ask what we should pay attention to as parents so that everything can be experienced in the best way possible. There will be problems, of course. However, most of these problems; It will be easily solvable with the cooperation of teachers, schools and families. If we pay attention to some of the details I will share with you, perhaps we will be able to prevent these problems before they arise.
As parents, we have a great influence on our children. First of all, we need to be aware of this. We convey our own concerns to our children. Even if we say, "I never show my concerns," this is not possible. Every word we say, every look in our eyes, every change in our facial expression affects our children. We must know this first.
I always see that it is not the anxious child, but the anxious parents. Therefore, let's take a look at what we should pay attention to in order to reduce our own concerns:
Especially as parents of our children starting the 1st grade, please do not think that our child's childhood is over. He is still a child; He will continue to play and run. This is their need. Just because school started, life did not end. Just today, when I met with a mother, I saw that this was the main problem and shared it.1. The most important thing in the classroom is that the child loves school and reading. This should be our main goal. Pages of homework have no effect other than overwhelming the child. Small repetitions and reading stories appropriate to the level will be sufficient.
School As parents of our new 1st grade children, it is very important for us to know that our children have their own unique characteristics, their readiness (muscle development, mental development, emotional development) is different, and each child's time is different. It is very important not to compare our children with their classmates, not to compare them with their older brothers, not to use them as examples.
We must emotionally prepare our children for starting school. “Now that school is starting, we will have a slightly different lifestyle than the summer holidays. We will go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. You will spend less time on computer-television-tablet-phone than during summer vacation. "You will still play them and watch them on television, but how can we plan both your lessons and these?" Time and rules should be determined together. These rules should not be broken unless there is a very unexpected problem.
School shopping should be done together with pleasure. One should share the child's excitement and happiness.
They should be asked how they feel and think about school, chat with them, and anxious children should be encouraged.
The child should not be intimidated. Like, 'Look, if you misbehave, your teacher will get angry'... Negative comments should never be made about the teacher.
Our child should not be placed with exaggerated expectations. Such as 'You will have a lot of fun', 'You will have a lot of friends'...
The child should be told that he/she will learn new things, make friends and do these in accordance with the rules.
Responsibilities such as dressing, carrying his/her bag and feeding should be given to the child. .
We should not turn homework into wars. Homework is the child's responsibility, not the parent's. 'Study' or 'Do homework' should not be said constantly. It is very painful when they think that they are doing their homework and responsibilities for us, not for themselves. We must be determined and willing in this regard. Being patient for a few days and exploding on the third day is not a useful solution.
A busy year awaits students preparing for the exams. I wish them success. They should not see the exam as the meaning of life or the only solution, but should consider it as an opportunity to get into a good high school or university. Families re-evaluate their expectations regarding their children, They should avoid pressure.
Things our children should pay attention to; They should work regularly every day, have confidence in their efforts, and their expectations should be in line with their efforts.
As parents, let us be facilitators for our children, not guides. Must have specific behavior. They will not behave in every way we want. Which they shouldn't do... Whether they can become self-sufficient individuals depends on how early we see them as individuals. They should be able to tell us their opinions easily and say "No" so that they can say this outside as well.
We should try to see and understand our children as a whole;let's not focus only on their behavior. They have feelings, thoughts and dreams... “What does he care about outside of himself?” Let's give him the opportunity to understand these. If we see our child as consisting only of behavior and results; We focus on grades, scores, success and rankings. Let's not focus on academic success and lose sight of the integrity of our children. Every child is unique and special. We can try to find the areas in which they are interested and talented and support them.
Let's not take their lives hostage so that they can achieve what we cannot achieve ourselves. It's their life... Let's just take care of the trust given to us.
Finally; Instead of being a slave to technology ourselves, the most important details are to devote truly meaningful and valuable time to our children, to share them, and to accumulate memories. Because when we get older in the future, these will be what we remember...
Dear parents, teacher friends and our dear students, I hope the new academic year will start and continue auspicious for all of us. With love…
