In the new education period, the orientation week for pre-school and first graders started yesterday. During the adaptation week, a number of activities are held to help students adapt to school more easily. It is ensured that the child gets to know and like the educational environment, and meets and socializes with teachers and schoolmates.
The child experiences his first separation from his parents when he starts school. Of course, this is not easy. We see that some children can get through this period more easily, while others do not want to go to school. The child who does not want to go to school cannot leave his parents and cries. When this situation becomes severe, the child develops school phobia. School phobia is a child's intense fear of school. The cause of school fear must be sought in the family. We see that children of overprotective, overly fond (dependent) or anxious families experience separation anxiety more.
The duties of families to overcome this period:
- Families of children who have just started school life must inform them about what the school is like, why they go to school and what is done, in order to eliminate the uncertainties in the child's mind.
- Parents should not judge or underestimate the child's fears. .
- It is important for them to act consistently and have a clear attitude towards their children.
- If families are experiencing anxiety, they should try not to reflect this situation on their children. Because children feel this anxiety and they also begin to develop anxiety.
- If the child has a severe fear of school and it does not decrease over time, it is recommended that they seek help from an expert.
The importance of the teacher should not be forgotten here. . The teacher plays a big role in the child's liking for school. He/she should reward the child's good behavior, talk about school rules, and plan games and activities to help the child socialize with his/her friends. It would be good for the teacher and the family to have close communication.
