Circumcision is a surgical procedure performed for religious and traditional reasons in the world and in our country. During this procedure, the foreskin, called the prepuce, is cut to an appropriate size.
Circumcision is generally performed with 3 techniques. These are guillotine, open and clamp techniques respectively.
Circumcision also has medical indications other than religious and traditional reasons. The main indications are vesioureteral reflux, recurrent urinary tract infections, posterior urethral valve, phimosis and paraphimosis. In case of these indications, circumcision should be performed as soon as possible. In fact, in case of paraphimosis, circumcision is required urgently.
Circumcision, except for medical indications, is not recommended at certain ages. This age range is 3-6 years old. This age group in the child psychological development phase is called the phallic period and sexual identity development occurs in this phase. At this stage, the child recognizes his sexual identity and genitals. Circumcision at this stage may cause sexual dysfunction in adulthood, so circumcision is not recommended in this age range unless there is a medical reason. If circumcision is performed during and after adolescence, circumcision is not recommended in this age group except for medical indication, as there is a higher probability of developing wound problems after the surgical procedure due to strong penile erections.
Circumcision is a serious surgical procedure. If it is to be done for traditional or religious reasons, it is recommended not to do it between the ages of 3-6. It can be done at any age outside this age range.
