EMDR Therapy Technique and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Trauma is when an individual is exposed to an event unexpectedly, in a way that pushes one's limits. The individual may be faced with sudden unexpected events throughout his life since he came to Earth, and this situation does not have any biopsychosocial limitations.

Wars, explosions, natural disasters (such as earthquakes, floods, fires), torture, rape, phobias, accidents, and violence can cause mental trauma. People try to overcome the traumatic events they experience by activating their coping mechanisms and try to get rid of the emotional burden. The extent of the trauma people experience and how they make sense of it with their current mood also have a great impact. Because each individual is different and it is necessary to consider that perception and interpretation can be different. It is expected that the traumatic symptoms that occur in the person will decrease day by day. Of course, this does not apply to every event. If the effect of the event and the emerging symptoms (such as flashbacks, nightmares, restlessness, anxiety) continue to last for more than 4 weeks after the traumatic event, getting support from a mental health professional is necessary for both the quality of life and comfort of the person. He has to live with the symptoms that occur after the traumatic event, and this is not the fate of the person.

EMDR, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, is a post-traumatic treatment method developed by psychotherapist Francine Shapiro and created in 1987 in the USA. It is a psychological treatment method depending on the branch of psychotraumatology. It can solve traumatic events with superior success with proven EMDR Therapy Techniques.

After establishing a therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client in EMDR therapy, the targeted memories and complaints are reached, and in the meantime, the client is given bidirectional stimuli. These stimuli occur in the form of eye movements shifting to the right and left, in the form of audible stimuli from both ears or by giving tactile (vibrating) stimuli. These two-way stimuli are the main method of this therapy and affect the result. These two-way stimuli are processed by strengthening the connection between the two hemispheres of the brain and establishing new connections. Removal of the effects of the memories is realized with this process, by reading the traumatic memories, the effects of which are still ongoing, with the semantic (semantic) memory located in the left hemisphere of the brain.

Recently, as a result of the applications performed on fibromyalgia patients of non-organic origin with the EMDR technique, the complaints of the patients have decreased and satisfactory results have been achieved in the form of feedback. Studies on this situation continue.

Do not neglect your life first for yourself and then for your loved ones.
