Non-Surgical Treatments for Breast Cancer

There are four different treatment options for breast cancer, including surgery. The goals of each of these treatments are different, and they provide the highest success rate when combined. What should be understood from this sentence is not that all treatment types will be applied to every patient. Which of these treatments will be applied is decided by looking at a number of criteria. General Surgery Specialist Assoc. Dr. Hüseyin Kadıoğlu explained breast-conserving surgery methods.

Assoc. Dr. Hüseyin Kadıoğlu “There are three types of treatment for breast cancer other than surgery. “Some of these treatments are performed by medical oncologists and some by radiation oncologists.” he said.

Hair Regenerates During Breast Cancer Chemotherapy!

Chemotherapy: It is one of the treatment methods that people have a nightmare about. However, this fear is actually partly due to lack of knowledge. The word chemotherapy is a combination of the words chemos (medicine) and therapy (treatment). It is used to describe systemic drugs to be taken for breast cancer. Chemotherapy in breast cancer is a treatment given at 21-day or weekly intervals, and unfortunately, chemotherapy taken specifically for breast cancer causes hair loss. However, what should not be forgotten is that the hair grows back at the end of the treatment. So, when your treatment is finished, your hair will grow back. Apart from this, there are also extremely successful wigs and similar products for your cosmetics during the chemotherapy process. There are many auxiliary methods (ozone therapy, neural therapy, etc.) to reduce side effects such as nausea, vomiting and fatigue during the chemotherapy process.

The Benefits Outweigh the Harms!

Radiotherapy: The specific purpose of radiotherapy for breast cancer is to prevent recurrences in the breast and armpit. The treatment is carried out with the help of devices and takes a period of 25-33 days. During this process, the patient goes to the hospital every weekday and receives treatment for approximately 5-10 minutes. The biggest side effect of radiotherapy during the treatment process is mostly 1st degree burns that may occur on the skin. Radiotherapy is a treatment that involves radiation. However, the benefit and harm ratio of this treatment varies for many years. It has been calculated repeatedly and it has been seen that the benefit ratio is incomparable with the harm. The decision for radiotherapy is also made by looking at the characteristics of the cancer in the patient.

Hormone Therapy Does Not Have Side Effects Such as Hair Loss and Nausea!

Hormone therapy: Hormone treatment for breast cancer is done with oral pills and/or monthly-3-monthly injections. It does not have side effects such as hair loss or nausea that disturb patients, unlike conventional chemotherapy. The decision whether to give hormone therapy or not is again related to whether the cancer secretes hormone receptors. In other words, there is no obligation to give hormone therapy to every patient. Which drug will be given to which patient depends on the patient's age and whether or not she is in menopause. The most common side effects of hormone medications are osteoporosis and thickening of the uterine wall. Therefore, annual bone measurements and gynecological examinations are also required while using these medications. Your doctor will definitely tell you about the checks you need to have according to the medicine used.
