Pregnant women are first given a 50-g screening test. This test is performed by drinking 50 grams of glucose, regardless of whether you are hungry or full, and measuring your blood sugar 1 hour after drinking. If the value in this test is over 140 g/dl, the second and diagnostic stage, the loading test, is started.
Loading tests are performed with 75 g or 100 g glucose. Loading tests should be performed on an empty stomach, the patient is told to fast at 21:00 the night before, and fasting blood sugar is taken at 09:00 in the morning. Then the patient drinks 75 or 100 g of glucose. If a 75-gram test is applied, blood sugars are taken in the first and second hours after drinking. If a 100-gram test is applied, blood sugars are taken 1.02 and 3 hours after drinking. If the results are above the limit values, the patient is diagnosed with gestational diabetes and in the next stage, the patient is put on a diet.
In most patients, sugar control is achieved with an effective diet. Postprandial blood sugar is monitored at 15-day intervals.
Satiety. Blood sugar tests are performed in the first or second hour after a normal meal that is eaten within 10 minutes. In these tests, if the first hour is measured, 140 gr/dl is considered the limit, if the second hour is measured, 120 gr/dl is considered the limit.
If sugar control cannot be achieved despite the diet, it may be necessary to switch to insulin treatment in these patients.
Birth. Afterwards, blood sugar should be monitored at least six weeks and 15 days apart, and the diet or medication treatment, if started, should be continued. It should not be forgotten that some of the patients with gestational diabetes, that is, gestational diabetes, may continue their lives as diabetics after birth.
