1-WHAT IS LUNG CANCER?
Lung cancer is the proliferation of cells from structurally normal lung tissue out of need and control and form a mass (tumor) in the lung. The mass formed here primarily grows in its environment. It then spreads to distant organs. Early diagnosis occurs mostly by chance or during the investigation of other diseases. However, 15% can be diagnosed early.
2-WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF LUNG CANCER? ESPECIALLY WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP WITH CIGARETTES?
85% of the disease is caused by smoking. There are over 5000 chemicals in cigarette smoke. More than 70 of these chemicals have properties that cause cancer. Additionally, the use of pipes, cigars and hookahs poses a great risk. There are chemicals in e-cigarettes that cause DNA damage. The incidence of leukemia, lymphoma, central nervous system tumors and liver tumors increases in children due to second-hand cigarette use and cigarette smoke.
Lung cancer is more common in industrial workers who use the remaining 15% of substances such as coal fire, some fuels used in cooking, radon gas, aspest, cadmium, aluminum and beryllium. Additionally, air pollution and diesel exhaust are important factors.
3- WHAT IS PASSIVE SMOKING? WHAT IS THE CONNECTION WITH THE FORMATION OF LUNG CANCER?
Passive smoking refers to people who are exposed to cigarette smoke even though they do not smoke. It increases the risk of lung cancer by 20%. Unfortunately, one in every three people who get lung cancer even though they have never smoked is a passive smoker. Every 5 cigarettes smoked causes non-smokers to smoke one cigarette.
4-WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF LUNG CANCER?
-Cough. Persistent cough lasting more than two weeks, gradually increasing, with unknown cause.
-Chest pain. Increased when taking deep breaths, coughing or laughing.
-Bleeding from sputum.
-Shortness of breath or wheezing.
-Lack of appetite and weight loss of unknown cause.
-Hoarseness or difficulty swallowing.
-Clubing in the fingers. Rapid and painful growth of the soft tissue at the tips of fingers and toes.
-Frequently recurring lung infections
- Body pain. Widespread or regional pain indicates spread to organs other than the lungs, which we call metastasis.
5-WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR LUNG CANCER?
People with lung cancer in the family
Especially for more than 15 years Those who have smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for a long time
Those who have smoked but quit smoking for less than 15 years.
Those who are between the ages of 55 and 74 and have a history of heavy smoking.
It may be possible to detect lung cancer early with lung tomography, which uses low doses for the 4 groups I mentioned above.
6-WHAT IS THE RATE OF LUNG CANCER IN BOTH WOMEN AND MEN?
All over the world in 2012. 1.8 million people have been diagnosed with lung cancer. It is seen in 60% of developing countries. The rate of lung cancer in men worldwide is decreasing, but it is increasing in women. While 25 years ago, lung cancer was seen in one woman for every 11 men, in recent years lung cancer has been seen in almost one woman for every two men.
