Sometimes depression during adolescence can result in suicide. Adolescence is the period with the highest suicide rate compared to other life periods. According to 2015 Turkish Statistical Institute data, the suicide rate in our country is 4.11 per hundred thousand. 34.3% of those who commit suicide are young people between the ages of 15-19.
Lack of love is shown as the most important reason for suicide in adolescents. Behaviors such as rejection, being despised, being disliked and being oppressed cause the adolescent to be unhappy. Loss of a parent, divorce of parents, lack of response in emotional relationships, or humiliation of the adolescent due to damage to his/her honor in society are causes of deep sadness in adolescents. A teenager who encounters these problems for the first time may become upset more easily because he has no previous experience in solving the problem. The extreme level of resentment and the fact that it makes the adolescent feel helpless and hopeless may push him to see death as an escape. Thinking that death is the only solution to their problems significantly increases the risk of suicide in adolescents.
Individuals at risk of committing suicide give some signs. The most important sign is his statement that he is going to take his own life. The most wrong attitude towards people who make such statements is the "don't do it" approach. Individuals who have attempted suicide before are also in the risk group. Hopelessness and reluctance about the future, conversations about death, constant boredom and unhappiness, feeling worthless, sleep disorders, substance or alcohol use and sudden changes in behavior are the prominent features in individuals with suicidal tendencies. Individuals who use alcohol or drugs experience a temporary feeling of courage. In this way, social pressures become imperceptible and the emergence of true emotions and tendencies becomes easier. For this reason, suicide attempts occur more easily in individuals who use drugs or alcohol.
When we look at adolescents who commit suicide, it is seen that those whose parents are separated and those who encounter suicide more frequently in their close circle attempt or commit suicide more often (Kulaksızoğlu, 2004).
It would be insufficient to explain suicide only with individual factors. Social factors should also be examined during the suicide process. At this point mom -father behavior has two important dimensions. The first is the readiness and acceptance to respond to demands, the second is being demanding to control and manage the adolescent. The combination of these two dimensions reveals 4 types of parenting patterns:
Competent parents: Raise socially and academically competent children.
Oppressive parents: Demanding but insufficient to respond, following rules. raises harmonious but obedient children with low self-perception.
Tolerant and relaxed parents: Raises children who are psychologically harmonious but can engage in deviant behavior.
Indifferent parents: Psychologically very weak. They raise children.
There may be arguments within the family from time to time, but high-level discussions are harmful and can increase anxiety and lead to negative consequences (Ulusoy, Demir, & Baran, 2005)
