Rituals (ceremonial movements) are performed at least twice. There is difficulty in controlling obsessions and compulsions, even they are done excessively. At least one hour a day is spent for this effort. The person does not enjoy doing these things, but it provides some reduction in anxiety.
Some patients with obsessive compulsive disorder are accompanied by tics. Tics are involuntary muscle movements.
Symptoms get worse over time. Patients generally tend to avoid situations that increase their obsessions.
