What Isn't Psychotherapy?

The process of psychotherapy is a very curious process by our clients/client candidates who have no previous experience in psychotherapy, as well as some inaccurate information about this process in our society. may have different expectations. For this reason, I would like to give you a few examples that we often come across from our sessions of “what the psychotherapy process is not”.

  • "One has to have very big problems to go to psychotherapy." p>People can go to psychotherapy without actually having any major problems, just to get to know themselves better and to better understand the choices they make in their lives.

  • "Let me go to psychotherapy so the psychologist can give me some advice."

  • It is not for us psychologists to tell our clients what to do. During the psychotherapy process, the client can gain some awareness and alternative perspectives about himself and his life. However, if the same client has something to do at the end of the day, he will still make the decision himself.

  • “If I go to psychotherapy, what I tell you will not be kept confidential.”

  • As per our confidentiality principle in psychotherapy Any information shared by our client is not shared with a third party, except in exceptional cases, that is, unless our client is in a situation to harm himself or someone else. In case of an exceptional situation, this information sharing with a third party is done within the knowledge of the client and as a professional obligation in order not to harm the client and/or anyone else. Let me relax.”

Although our clients may feel relieved after some sessions, they may not feel well after some sessions, and this is quite normal. The reason for this is that the awareness experienced during the sessions may not always make our clients happy.

  • “If I tell everything in psychotherapy, my psychologist will judge me.

  • A psychologist who behaves in accordance with professional ethics does not listen to his clients for the purpose of judgment, but to evaluate the clients and what they tell from a clinical perspective. Therefore, our clients can tell everything they want to tell to us psychologists without the worry of being judged. However, if you felt like you were being judged by the psychologist in front of you, giving feedback to your psychologist on this issue can also help clear up any misunderstanding and even strengthen your therapeutic relationship. We hope that it will be a useful information for prospective clients who have reservations and different expectations. I wish you healthy days.
