Water Consumption in Winter

The weather is getting colder, the days are getting shorter, our movement is decreasing, we are now in the winter months. Our diet also changes with the seasons. While we consume more water and eat lighter in the summer months, we consume less water and eat heavier meals in the winter months. The main reason for this is the effect of air temperatures on our psychology.

The feeling of thirst occurs when body water decreases by 1%. At a decrease of 10%, life-threatening risks begin. For this reason, we need to wait until we feel thirsty to drink water. We need to consume 2-2.5 liters of water daily, which is indispensable for our survival. (a person's fluid needs vary depending on gender, age, health status and weight)

As the weather gets colder, hot drink consumption begins to increase. Thus, when we drink water in summer, hot foods such as coffee and tea are replaced. But coffee and tea can never replace water. On the contrary, it causes us to lose water from our body due to its diuretic effect. In addition, our calorie consumption begins to increase significantly with sugar and various syrups added to hot drinks. By reaching this awareness, we can avoid both excessive caffeine intake and harmful calorie intake by limiting our coffee consumption to 2 cups a day, our tea consumption to 3 cups without sugar, and taking care to consume water.

In addition to regular water consumption, the liquid taken with food can also be consumed during the day. It supports our needs. So, what are the foods that support our daily water consumption?

  • Fruits and vegetables;

  • Fruits contain water in various amounts. Vegetables and fruits, which meet our daily vitamin and mineral needs, also help us maintain our body balance and balance our bowel movements with the water and fiber they contain.

  • Soups;

  • Soups, which most of us prefer especially in the winter months, support our fluid consumption, helping us feel full, balancing our body temperature and supporting our fluid consumption. In addition, soups help us protect against colds and strengthen our immune system. But at this point, what is important is our soup choices. Most of the soups we consume outside contain flour or excess fat. ğ is found. Ready-made soups found in markets contain substances called MSG, which damage your brain saturation point and cause obesity. For this reason, if we pay attention to the content of the soup we consume, we can provide the necessary benefits in both weight control and healthy nutrition. Although vegetable soups vary depending on their content, they also help us relieve edema in the body. So in the right hands, soup can be magic and in the wrong hands, it can be a nightmare.

  • Herbal Teas;

  • Black tea, which is very common in our society, is more effective. As we mentioned before, it has an intense diuretic effect. Consuming too little water and too much tea tires our kidneys and leaves our body dehydrated. You can resort to herbal teas to reduce your black tea consumption. Each herbal tea has its own special effects. Especially teas such as linden, fennel, chamomile and lemon balm help you relax physiologically and psychologically, get rid of your gas problem and protect you from colds. Additionally, since it does not have any diuretic effect, it does not cause water loss.
