First of all, I would like to talk a little about what it means to use the term high functioning for a psychological disorder. A behavior or way of thinking must meet certain parameters to be said to be psychologically distressing. One of the most important of these parameters is functionality. In other words, if a behavior or way of thinking negatively affects us in basic areas such as going to work, going to school, going to the market or being able to communicate with other people, we can say that that behavior or way of thinking causes impairments in functionality.
For example, let's take depression. Depression is not actually defined as a single disorder. Technically, we call these disorders “Depression Disorders”. Common features of depressive disorders are major losses in functionality and reluctance to take action.
So far in this article, we have briefly touched upon what dysfunction and depression mean. Accordingly, we can actually understand a person with depression with some clues or observations. However, this judgment is much more difficult for people with high-functioning depression. In other words, the most important thing that distinguishes high-functioning depression from other depression disorders is that the symptoms are more difficult to notice when viewed from the outside.
Over time, a psychological disorder we experience begins to hinder the things we need to do to continue our lives. However, the term high-functioning shows us that this situation is slightly different. In other words, while there is no discomfort when viewed from the outside; The person may experience serious and long-term problems at some points within himself.
This is actually the dangerous point in high-functioning depression disorder. Since the person's problem is not clearly understood by those around him, the person experiencing the disorder may feel alone for a long time and may have difficulty deciding to get professional help regarding this disorder.
High-functioning depression disorder is also referred to as ongoing depression disorder or dysthymia in different sources.
Some of the symptoms of high-functioning depression disorder are mentioned respectively. I will finish it. At least two of these symptoms must be observed for at least two years for adults and for at least one year for adolescents. These symptoms must be evaluated by a professional.
Decreased desire to eat or overeating
Insomnia or excessive sleeping
Decrease in inner strength (energy level) or exhaustion
Decrease in self-esteem
Inability to focus or difficulty making decisions
Feelings of hopelessness
If you have observed at least two of these symptoms for more than two years, you should consult a professional. I advise. It is also worth reminding again. Having or not having these symptoms is definitely not a sufficient criterion to diagnose yourself. You need to consult a specialist for evaluation of different parameters and correct diagnosis and treatment.
