Does a Gluten-Free Diet Lose Weight?

One of the most popular weight loss diets lately is the gluten-free diet. I hear sentences such as "I don't eat bread, gluten is harmful", "I eat gluten-free to lose weight" from many people around me. Well, do you know what gluten is, which is shown as a poison?

Gluten is actually a complex structure made up of glutenin and prolamine proteins. This protein, which is found in wheat, barley and rye, gives elasticity to the dough and makes the dough rise.

WHY GLUTEN-FREE DIET?

Gluten-free diet is an elimination diet that has been practiced by celiac patients for years and in which grains such as wheat, barley, rye and all foods containing them are prohibited. When celiac patients consume gluten, the small intestines are damaged and the absorption of nutrients in the walls of the small intestine is reduced or absent. Individuals with celiac or gluten sensitivity experience symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, dermatitis, and fatigue due to the malabsorption of nutrients. To prevent this damage to the intestines, these patients consume a gluten-free diet.

However, contrary to popular belief, there is no published report showing that gluten-free diet provides weight loss in studies conducted in people without celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. It is thought that the possible effect of gluten-free diet on weight loss may be related to decreased food variety and consequent decrease in energy intake. However, when the gluten-free diet is applied, instead of the foods removed from the diet, sugar, fat or gluten-free products increase in weight instead of weight decrease. The most important reason why gluten-free products cause weight gain is that they have lower fiber and protein content, as well as higher fat content. In fact, it should not be forgotten that due to the removal of whole grains in these diets, it may cause deficiencies in fiber and some B group vitamins.

CONCLUSION… If you are not experiencing any sensitivity, it is much healthier to lose weight with a balanced diet instead of a gluten-free diet. and you will achieve successful results.
