Tooth decay can be remineralized with fluoride applications when it is in its early stages. If the remineralization stage has passed, it will be necessary to restore the tooth with a composite or amalgam filling. If the patient does not come to the doctor at this stage, the decay progresses to the vascular-nerve complex inside the tooth, that is, the pulp, and after this stage, the tooth begins to ache. The treatment to be performed after this stage is root canal treatment. If the patient neglects it again, the infection involving the pulp progresses along the root and from the root tip to the bone. When it progresses into the bone, the infection becomes visible on radiography after a certain time. Meanwhile, if the infection progresses rapidly from the bone to the soft tissues outside the bone, cellulitis and then abscess occurs. If the abscess is not drained and the tooth is not treated, it will spontaneously open out of the soft tissues. The opening point may be in the mouth or on the face. If there is an opening through the facial skin, aesthetic problems occur.
In the past, root canal treatments were very painful procedures. For this reason, many patients are still afraid of having root canal treatment. However, technology is now very advanced. Now, the relevant tooth can be anesthetized and root canal treatment can be performed in one or several stages, and patients do not feel any pain. Root canal treatment is the last step before tooth extraction. Patients who do not go to the doctor due to fear of dentists will lose their teeth and will need treatments such as bridges or implants, which are even more troublesome and costly.
