The Relationship between Wisdom Teeth and Orthodontic Treatment

Wisdom teeth are also called third molars and can usually appear at the back of the mouth after the age of 17. Although it is called wisdom teeth, teeth can often be extracted before our patients reach the age of 20. Wisdom teeth can be evaluated in 3 different ways.

The first of these is fully impacted wisdom teeth. These teeth can be extracted as long as they are not adjacent to the mandibular nerve in the lower jaw, and in some cases, minor local operations may be required. In some cases, surgery is not recommended for fully impacted wisdom teeth that are found to be adjacent to the mandibular nerve, due to the risk of loss of sensation.

Another type of wisdom teeth are fully erupted wisdom teeth, which are generally not intervened in. Since these teeth are the teeth positioned at the back, they may not pose a problem at first. However, when effective tooth brushing is not done, wisdom teeth can quickly decay, and this decay can spread to the 2nd molar tooth located in front of the wisdom tooth.

Finally, the most dangerous type of wisdom teeth are semi-buried wisdom teeth. These teeth usually have a layer of gum on the chewing surface of the tooth. This layer is called the gingival hood. Due to this hood, food residue can often get between the teeth and gum hood, and infective situations may be encountered even if the individual keeps oral hygiene at the highest level. In such cases, complaints such as pain, swelling, bleeding and odor are observed.

Wisdom teeth must be evaluated before orthodontic treatments and must be extracted if deemed necessary. In cases where it does not affect orthodontic treatments, wisdom teeth can be re-evaluated at the end of the treatment and extraction can be considered to prevent long-term recurrence of orthodontic treatment.

Thanks to today's developing technology, wisdom teeth operations are no longer feared procedures. The physician, who performs the examination with advanced imaging techniques before tooth extraction, can perform the procedure with minimal tissue loss and in the shortest time possible, and our patients can continue their daily lives after the operation. 20 years Most of the dental operations can be performed under local anesthesia in a maximum of one to one and a half hours.
