From the moment we are born, our body system begins to defend against positive or negative external factors. And with this defense, it tries to oppose and fight against physical or mental diseases. At that time, we get caught up in the flow of life, school-family-exams-work-social environment etc. Then we get very tired and most of the time we don't even have the opportunity to rest. Of course, in the meantime, we experience some undesirable events and losses. If we cannot cope or survive the events we experience, depression catches us like a huge spider imprisoning us in its huge web. In fact, a person does not need to experience a major trauma or loss to have depression complaints. Any mood that can upset or affect us can lead to depression. So much so that the Ministry of Health, which conducted a research on the prevalence of depression in our country covering 7479 people, found the prevalence of depression to be 4.0%. Additionally, prevalence rates; It was found to be 5.4% in women and 2.3% in men. On the other hand; Based on research conducted in 2007, it was observed that the prevalence of depression has increased significantly and consistently for more than 30 years, although the exact cause is unknown.
When we look at these rates, it is not possible for every person with depression complaints to experience a severe trauma or a seriously depressed mood. So that; Unfortunately, many famous people around the world have struggled with depression for a while.
The biggest mistake we make is; DENIAL. As I mentioned at the beginning, since our body system works to defend us against any negativity, we usually defend ourselves in such situations directly with the 'denial' method, or we think we do. The important point I have to say is this; Just like if we have the flu or a headache, we want to be treated to get better, many psychological disorders are like this. If it is recognized early and help is sought, positive results can be obtained with appropriate treatment methods and methods. However, if a person chooses to deny it, he or she allows depression to take over. Because our brain works to receive facts immediately. He will believe whatever we try to deceive him, but he cannot change the reality of the situation. You can think of this as a kind of illusion. As the person continues to deny it and the body tries to resist, after a while it gets tired and begins to turn the functioning of the body system into a negative one.
Depression causes a collapse in people's psychological mechanisms and biological functions. The person gets caught up in negative emotions and thoughts. The negativity that occurs in thoughts is also reflected in behavior, and after a while it begins to go beyond its normal course. Naturally, the defense system is also attacked and begins to be suppressed. Its resistance to external factors gradually decreases.
According to the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, depression symptoms;
***5 or more of the symptoms must be present during the same 2-week period.
-Depressed mood occurs almost every day (most of the day). (looking tearful, tired, exhausted)
-There is a significant decrease in interest and desire for almost all activities.
-Decrease (loss of appetite) or increase in desire to eat almost every day
p>
-Experiencing excessive sleepiness or insomnia almost every day.
-Low energy, weakness, exhaustion experienced almost every day.
-Experiencing excessive lack of energy almost every day. feelings of rumination or guilt.
-Having trouble concentrating or thinking almost every day. (Indecision).
- Recurrent thoughts of death, thoughts or attempts of suicide. (feeling of hopelessness).
The symptoms I mentioned above are classic emotional states that many of us sometimes experience in our daily lives. However, the differential diagnostic criteria that should be taken into consideration are; It is the gradual decrease in functionality or constantly recurring thoughts of death or suicide attempts approximately every day for at least 2 weeks.
Of course, sometimes we feel hopeless and feel deep sadness in situations that affect us negatively. Because what it means to be human is the correct reactions we give to events. In order for these to become depression, a seriously depressed mood and a gradual deterioration in health status can be shown as some of the factors. (loss of function, own observation or discourse of outsiders).
