Before explaining the different aspects of this subject, it is necessary to talk about the types of diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes occurs after the beta cells that secrete insulin from the pancreas are completely damaged. That's why these patients, that is, patients with Type 1 Diabetes, unfortunately have to use insulin throughout their lives. It is not possible for these patients to stop using insulin, with our current knowledge.
Gestational Diabetes can be defined as diabetes that occurs as a result of the increase in sugar levels of a pregnant woman who did not have diabetes before. If adequate blood sugar control cannot be achieved with diet in these pregnant women, it is necessary to control blood sugar with insulin. These people need to continue using insulin until after pregnancy.
Obesity and insulin resistance lie at the root of Type 2 Diabetes. Many treatment alternatives have emerged today for these people. 20 years ago, drug options for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes were very few. Insulin was used much more intensively in Type 2 Diabetes patients. However, today, very strong and effective drug options have been introduced for the treatment of diabetes. That's why insulin treatment has decreased relatively.
Obesity stands out as a very serious problem, especially in Type 2 diabetic patients. Therefore, when weight loss is achieved in patients with weight loss medications, their insulin resistance decreases and in some patients, insulin can be discontinued or the insulin dose frequency can be reduced. Since some of the medications we have used in recent years also have appetite suppressant properties, the hunger crises we frequently see in diabetic patients can be prevented. In this way, patients can both lose weight and reduce their insulin resistance. As a result, some patients can stop using insulin.
Finally, I would like to express this here. I believe that the image that using insulin is a bad thing is very wrong. Thanks to insulin, many people's lives have been saved. However, since the use of insulin causes some restrictions in people's lives, it causes compliance problems in patients.
