Bed Wetting in Children

Bedwetting behavior in children is a problem that significantly affects the daily life and quality of life of families and children. Bedwetting may have physiological reasons, but it may also be caused by many psychological problems. It is one of the most common problems among mental illnesses seen in childhood.

Children gain control of their bladder muscles when they are 2-3 years old and bedwetting can be considered normal during the toilet training process, but if the child is 5 years old and the urogenital system is affected. If there is no organic disorder, that is, if urinary incontinence cannot be explained by a physical reason by the physician, it is likely to be due to a psychological reason. Conflicts and tensions experienced by the child in his/her inner world may cause bedwetting in a child with poor toilet control.

The cooperation of parents is very important in the treatment of bedwetting in children. One of the most common mistakes parents make is tying a diaper under the child before going to sleep at night or laying a waterproof material so that the child can feel it. At this point, the child internalizes the thoughts that he/she will wet the bed at night and that I am a burden to my mother/father, and this increases the level of anxiety and causes us to go back in bedwetting treatment. During the parents' treatment process; to control the child's fluid intake before sleep, to communicate calmly and clearly with the child, to control their reactions and be patient when they encounter bedwetting behavior, to clean the bed and personal hygiene process with the child in a constructive manner when they encounter bedwetting behavior, not to impose punishment during the treatment process, b In this process, it is very important to implement the activities recommended by the therapist within the family integrity in order to reduce the child's anxiety level.
