The Relationship Between Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity

Type 2 Diabetes is a global health problem that is increasing rapidly all over the world and causing great costs both socially and economically. The number of diabetics is expected to reach 330 million patients in 2025. The most important risk factor for Type 2 Diabetes is excessive obesity, which is also increasing rapidly. Today, approximately 150 million of overweight or obese people who have no health problems will have Type 2 Diabetes in the next 10 years. This intertwining of Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity has been described by Ziv and Shafrir as "Diabesity". It has now become the main target of many institutions, especially the World Health Organization, as a health problem that is difficult to overcome, with severe kidney failure leading to dialysis, wounds due to nerve damage and severe cardiovascular diseases.

Type 2 Diabetes is among the top five causes of death all over the world.

Type 2 Diabetes in Turkey

The frequency of Type 2 Diabetes in Turkey It is known as 13.7%. According to this data, the treated Type 2 Diabetes patient population is estimated to be 4.5 Million people in 2015.
The total annual cost of Type 2 Diabetes with its complications for the Turkish healthcare system is estimated at 5.144 billion Euros. Costs for the treatment of complications of diabetes constitute a large part of the total expenses, with cardiovascular complications accounting for 32.7% of the total treatment cost. Kidney, eye, and neurological complications account for 25.1%, 6.4%, and 6.0% of the total DM cost, respectively. Medications represent 10.5% of the annual Type 2 Diabetes treatment expense, while oral antidiabetic drug regimes (non-insulin) account for 5.5% and insulin-based regimens 5.0% of the total Type 2 Diabetes cost. The annual cost of medications used to treat complications and comorbidities is estimated to be 14.2% of the total cost. The direct annual screening cost rate is 4.5%.

Direct treatment costs of Type 2 Diabetes Relationship with Type 2 Diabetes It increased with the presence and progression of chronic complications. Hospitalization costs have become a significant proportion and have started to increase with the presence and progression of complications related to Type 2 Diabetes. In order to reduce the impact on resources allocated to health, efforts should be made to prevent the progression of Type 2 Diabetes complications, to monitor complications and to better manage them.

Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes and its complications poses a significant financial burden on the healthcare system in Turkey. The treatment cost of Type 2 Diabetes and its complications corresponds to 1% of the total Turkish economy (GDP).

The Prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes

Lifestyle and food types and habits in modern western societies are more has become widespread. As a result, the traditional lifestyle was replaced by fast-paced city life in many developing societies. In the traditional lifestyle, individual movement was a necessity and a part of life. The foods consumed mostly consisted of natural dishes made from products they grew themselves and did not contain any additives. However, in modern city life, movement is almost completely restricted due to public transportation, computers and electronic entertainment. H A fast pace necessitated western-type fast-food eating habits. These foods, which contain excessive animal fat and carbohydrates, have increased obesity exponentially because they are extremely refined and unnatural. Lack of physical activity and poor and poor quality nutrition have made diabetes (diabetes + obesity) the most important health problem.

This change of developing societies in a way that resembles western-type societies is explained by Arthur Koestler in his book The Call Girls. It is called "Coca-Colonization".

When increasing life expectancy and malnutrition combined, developing societies were faced with the problems and costs caused by various non-communicable diseases, especially Type 2 Diabetes.

Childhood Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes in Children

The incidence of Type 2 Diabetes has now increased in childhood. Typically, Type 2 Diabetes is a disease seen in adulthood. While childhood diabetes is mostly Type 1 A Diabetes, today, with the increase in childhood obesity, the number of children with Type 2 Diabetes is increasing. In fact, in Japan, up to 80% of childhood diabetes cases occur in children with Type 2 Diabetes. Diabesity is as important and vital a problem for children as it is for adults. While until today, only 3% of childhood diabetics had Type 2 Diabetes, today this rate rises to 45% in newly diagnosed diabetics. This is due to the fact that, just like adults, our children move less and spend time indoors due to computer games and television. This situation is called "Nintendo-nization".

DIABESITY
(Diabetes and Obesity)

Type 2 Diabetes (Adult Wet Diabetes) is the most important health problem of today. Because Type 2 Diabetes (Adult Age Diabetes) is important not only in terms of its treatment costs, but also in terms of the damage it causes to human life and the treatment costs of the serious diseases it causes. your world wide All developed countries spend a significant part of their annual budgets for the treatment of problems such as heart diseases, hypertension, stroke, hyperlipemia, kidney failure and visual disorders that occur due to diabetes.

Obesity is the same as Type 2 Diabetes ( In epidemic situations such as Adult Diabetes Mellitus, it is rapidly increasing in all societies. The most important risk factor for Type 2 Diabetes (Adult Age Diabetes) is obesity, that is, fatness that causes problems. Today, Type 2 Diabetes (Adult Age Diabetes) and obesity coexist so frequently that they are almost mentioned together.

The 150 million obese people living in America today will develop Type 2 Diabetes (Adult Age Diabetes) within the next 10 years. It is predicted that he will be included in the patient group to be treated due to diabetes.

We call the combination of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes (Adult Age Diabetes) DIABESITY.

What is the role of obesity and diabetes in metabolic syndrome?

Obesity, Insulin resistance, Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome are actually successive steps of the same complex disease group. Thinking that there are separate diseases or problems prevents timely and effective treatment. This situation, which is now triggered by obesity and presents a very serious and fatal picture that extends to metabolic syndrome on the basis of Type 2 Diabetes, has become an epidemic all over the world.

This deadly association, which extends from obesity to diabetes and affects all vital organs, is called "DIABESITY". If you have Type 2 Diabetes and are overweight, you definitely have diabetes. However, you do not necessarily have to have bad blood sugar or high bad cholesterol to have diabetes. Even just insulin resistance and excess weight can leave you with the risks of diabetes. Diabesity is the beginning and name of a process that leads to Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome.

Today, overweight people in America constitute almost 70% of the population. These people are in the pre-diabetic stage. However, after a certain period of time, most of them can cause serious and fatal problems. They will only have Type 2 Diabetes.

Skinny Fat People
Although diabetes by definition includes diabetes and obesity problems, it is possible to see the symptoms of diabetes in patients who are not yet overweight. The body mass index (BMI) of these patients is at the limit of normal people. However, intra-abdominal fat has significantly increased in these people. These normal weight people, whose abdominal circumference is over 92 cm in men and 88 cm in women, are in the high risk group for metabolic syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes. We call these patients "skinny fat people" because of their dense intra-abdominal fat deposits. Even though these patients appear thin or normal from the outside, they have medical diabetes disorder due to internal organ fat.

Diabesity is the biggest problem of our century. It is one of the leading causes of death due to heart attack, stroke, hypertension, cancer, blindness and kidney failure.

Many patients are not aware of the problems they experience due to diabetes. Even doctors are often unable to name it. Many patients do not know that they are in the grip of a process that leads to fatal problems, and they also do not know that they can get rid of this situation completely with early diagnosis and treatment.

The most important reason for this is that the seriousness of such problems is now evident in every aspect until diabetes and the problems it causes manifest themselves. is so ignored. Having obesity or insulin resistance is not a situation to be taken lightly.

Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes are a common disease group in our society, starting from childhood and affecting the whole society.
