Suicide

Rehabilitation centers with only suicide cases are needed for the treatment of people who have attempted suicide but did not succeed. Psychological support should be given to both the patient and his family. I believe that it would be beneficial to give informative seminars to students and parents at schools. When we look at the literature in general, we come across the following definition for suicide: “Suicide is the decision to end life with the intention and purpose of dying, with a method believed to result in death, and the implementation of this decision.” (Agilkaya, 2010)

There is no perfect life. There is no perfect person. Why does man want to kill his sweet soul when he knows this? Suicide is actually an escape; It is the desire to get rid of himself and the burdens on his back. Suicide is a cry for help, help. In fact, the person gives the signals to the people around him. You need eyes to see and ears to hear. If the environment is deaf and blind, there is no hearing or sight.

The term suicidal behavior/term describes a range and process of behavior that starts with thought and ends with death.

Completed suicide is an event that results in death. A suicide attempt is an attempt by a person to kill himself. Suicidal ideation is defined as thinking about killing oneself and making plans in this direction. Suicide is a serious public health problem globally. Nearly one million people commit suicide every year (WHO). In high-income countries, this number rises to 11.5. This rate has been reported as 7.2 per 100 thousand people in Turkey. These are the figures shared with the public, but in reality this number is estimated to be much higher than we were told.

When we look at the 2018 data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute, a total of 3,118 people committed suicide in 2018. seems to have ended. 75.6 percent of this was men and 24.4 percent were women. It is known that this number is increasing every year. plandemic Although it is known that there is a higher increase in this number with the Turkish Statistical Institute, TÜİK has not announced the latest figures.

It is known that male suicide rates are higher than females. Especially in wealthy countries, the number of men committing suicide is three times that of women. According to WHO, although 79 percent of suicides worldwide occur in low- and middle-income countries, the highest suicide rate is observed in countries with high welfare levels.

So, what are the reasons that push people to commit suicide? There are various reasons for this. A person who attempts suicide resorts to suicide in order to take revenge, teach or punish someone out of anger or because of the intense feeling of helplessness and loneliness that accompanies it. The person may not be able to produce different alternative solutions because he or she feels in a dead-end street.

In the first type of suicide, the person chooses suicide to intimidate those around him, to get attention and help from them, or to give a kind of message in an effort to get love. These suicides are also seen as a way of seeking help.

In the second type of suicide, the aim of the individual is really to kill himself. For this purpose, suicide is mostly seen in individuals with psychiatric disorders. Depression patients constitute the highest risk group for real suicides. (Apaydın & Ark, 2016)

It is known that high rates of depressive symptoms are seen in people who commit suicide and that 70 percent of suicides that result in death in studies are from patients with depression. (Journal of Forensic Medicine, 2004)

Psychological reasons such as "loneliness" as well as difficult life conditions such as unemployment, financial difficulties and chronic diseases have a great impact on a person's decision to commit suicide. It is to be known that the goal of many who attempt suicide is not death, but rather to communicate, seek help, and change the situation they are in and unhappy with. While some researchers examining suicide see the cause of suicide in environmental factors, some researchers associate it with psychological or family problems. e prevent. Family is sharing, family is trust, family is love. When these are absent or weak, the person is left alone, confused about what to do. If he has no one to share his happiness with, if he has no family or friends to whom he can tell his troubles and find a few words of consolation when he is sad, the lack of them either leads to the addiction of drugs or leads him to an irreversible path. similar to the building. After a few tremors, it will inevitably collapse. Problems that cannot be solved within the family, individuals who grow up lacking the basic sense of love, compassion, trust and belonging, begin to seek the love they need in different ways in order to close the gap inside them. As the attachment to the family decreases, other addictions emerge and the advanced dimension of these addictions becomes suicide. Family and love are two important elements; A person who loses these loses himself and his future.

It is not possible to be a good parent by drowning the child in money and doing whatever they want. It is necessary to distinguish between the wants and needs of the child. If the basic needs of love, trust and sense of belonging are not given to an adolescent whose every wish except love is met, it is inevitable to experience problems in the family. There are no problem children, there are problem parents.

What are the misconceptions about suicide?

“Asking someone if they have suicidal thoughts, it puts the idea of suicide in their mind and There is a misconception that it will cause him to commit suicide. Suicidal behavior is a call for help. You have to know and accept this. Asking about suicidal thoughts helps a person seek help and unload their emotional load by talking about these feelings. The person who has the opportunity to talk about suicide ideas will be relieved and relieved of the vicious circle of suicide. The person who talks about suicide doesn't do it, he's just trying to get attention.

In fact, about 80 percent of people who take their own life have told others about their suicidal intention before. When someone talks about suicide, it must be taken seriously. If a person really wants to kill himself, no one can stop him.

Actually, in People who commit suicide mostly do not want to die but to live the life they have. The aim is to put an end to the deep pain they experience.

The common features of suicides are as follows: Unbearable soul pain is the common stimulus of every suicide. The common goal in suicide is the search for a solution. There have been times when human beings felt helpless in the face of the problems experienced. At such times, the absence of anyone to get help or share their problems with can lead people to an irreversible path. Recognize such a need and set out to support individuals with suicidal ideation with volunteer psychologists and psychological counselors from 81 provinces of Turkey, Germany, Azerbaijan and Cyprus. Our colleagues, who receive various trainings for a year, provide support voluntarily.

I think that our state should take an urgent action to prevent suicides. Rehabilitation centers with only suicide cases are needed for the treatment of people who have attempted suicide but have not been successful. Psychological support should be given to both the patient and his family. I believe that it would be beneficial to provide informative seminars to students and parents in schools.

Suicide is not only a problem of the person who committed suicide or that family. We are all individually responsible. From a student, neighbor, colleague or relative at school… We need to be sensitive for this. If there are people around us who have recently withdrawn, do not talk, are thoughtful, stagnant, or have been distributing their loved ones to the people around them, talking about leaving and not coming back, it is necessary to talk to them, listen to them, try to support them, and encourage them to get help.

Suicide is a preventable behavior; as long as we know how to hold the outstretched hand.
