The concha, which we call the concha, is the structure consisting of bone and soft tissue components, starting from the entrance part of our nose and extending to the back of the nose. We have stated in our previous articles that there are three layers in the nose and that they have duties in humidifying, cleaning, heating and smelling the air. The presence of these structures in the nose of a certain size, which causes problems such as nasal congestion, snoring, sleep disturbance, decreased smell, attacks of sinusitis, and otitis media when overgrown, is extremely important for our breathing quality. In case of overgrowth, appropriate dye can be brought in with short and easy methods, which we call radiofrequency application, or by surgical methods.
Adenoid, which is called adenoid in medicine, is very confused with nasal flesh among the people. As the name suggests, adenoid is found in the nasal region, that is, in the upper dome of the throat. The function of congenital adenoid is more active in the first 10 years of life. Although it has a role in body defense, its size creates problems especially in children. The cause of excessive growth is allergic body and exposure to indoor cigarette smoke, especially in childhood. It can also grow in advanced ages, but the size at advanced ages may not be due to a benign condition as in childhood. Especially the adenoid size outside the childhood period requires further investigations. Adenoid size is manifested in childhood by sleeping with the mouth open, wetting the pillow with saliva, snoring, jaw development disorders, recurrent ear infections or hearing loss. Especially, hearing loss causes problems in education and language learning in children. When this condition is suspected, help from an ENT physician should be sought. The adenoid size in adults also causes nasal congestion and ear congestion. As we mentioned earlier, adult size requires further research as it may indicate some types of cancer. For this reason, adults should definitely seek help from an ENT specialist.
As a result, adenoid size is a problem that should definitely be consulted to a colleague, regardless of age, because of the chronic problems it causes. Stay well.
