What is Orthognathic Surgery?
Orthognathic surgical treatments are treatments in which the upper jaw and/or lower jaw are repositioned by moving them in three directions of space.
Who Performs These Treatments?
These treatments involve teamwork. The indispensable parts of this team are an orthodontist and the physician who will perform the surgical procedure. The surgical procedure can be performed by a plastic surgeon or jaw surgeon (maxillofacial surgeon) who is experienced in this field.
To Whom is the Treatment Applied?
These treatments can be applied to patients with really serious jaw disorders. It is applied to patients who have completed their growth and development. Most patients who are candidates for these treatments are those who have restricted themselves from their social environment due to their appearance, cannot perform chewing and speaking functions properly, suffer from joint pain from time to time, and in very advanced cases, breathing is affected by apnea attacks. In milder cases, the condition is not this severe, but the patient may have serious aesthetic concerns. The orthodontist and the patient should decide on the treatment together. As in all kinds of treatments in the field of medicine, the patient should be presented with options and the patient should be given the opportunity to choose. For example, in our patient with a jaw problem, first of all, the severity of the problem, which jaw it is connected to, whether the teeth can close properly with non-surgical braces treatment, non-surgical treatment (if possible) and all the conditions that will be observed in the patient after surgical treatment should be explained in detail. Photographs of patients who have undergone surgery should be presented to the patient and time should be given to the patient.
What Awaits the Patient at the End of Treatment?
After successful treatments - especially those that are severe before treatment In these cases, we can say that a completely different life awaits the patient in terms of psychosocial and quality of life. At the end of the treatment, the patient has gained self-confidence, wants to be in every social environment and take photos, laughs to his heart's content, can cut an apple with his front teeth, enjoys picking seeds, can use the chewing function effectively, can pronounce letters such as f, t, s, z properly, and does not snore at night. Individuals who have decreased blood pressure and can easily close their mouth and lips during sleep start their new lives.
Are There Risks of Treatment?
Gene First of all, of course, every surgical operation carries risks. I must say that our patients should have their consultations with physicians who are experts and have experience in this field.
