Binge Eating

People with binge eating disorder weigh more than expected for their height and are often diagnosed with obesity. People cannot stop eating even if they are not hungry, they often want to eat even when they are full when they feel bad or negative. Eating when feeling negative becomes a pleasurable process that relaxes the person. The person eats a large amount of food in a short time.

When we look at the causes of binge eating disorder, giving the image that thin people are more beautiful and more attractive on social media, pressure from family or environment to be weak, not being at peace with one's body, self-confidence. We can list the reasons such as being less able to cope with stress or negative emotions, insufficient attention and affection by parents, exposure to traumas related to body image. Individuals with low self-esteem see food as a safe haven. Eating disorder rating scale, Beck depression scale, SCALA-90 scales should be applied first to the client who applies with this problem. If binge eating attacks are caused by a psychological problem of the person, therapies should be applied to solve this. Cognitive-behavioral therapy gives very effective results in binge eating problem. If the client has negative experiences and traumas related to body image or early childhood, these can also be resolved with EMDR treatment or hypnotherapy. Because these traumatic memories are like hunchbacks in the person's body, they are with him wherever he goes and prevent him from enjoying the present moment and living the present.

In cognitive behavioral therapy, dysfunctional automatic thoughts and beliefs are examined together with the client. Therapies are aimed at changing thoughts, gaining coping skills when one feels negative or encountering stressful situations, increasing ego capacity, gaining self-confidence, working on traumatic memories so that they don't give up on eating whenever they feel bad.
