The cause of pain that may occur during normal movements in the front or back of the ankle and the movement and physical limitation due to this pain may be impingement syndrome. This condition, which occurs especially after repeated ankle sprains, can lead to serious problems if not diagnosed early and treated appropriately. Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Asst. Assoc. Dr. Levent Arslan wrote about ankle tightness.
Pain is often the first complaint in ankle tightness. If the compression is in the front, pain occurs when the ankle is pulled towards itself. If the compression is in the back, pain occurs when the ankle moves downward. This pain may lead to limitation of movement and rest pain after a while. Because of this, the person may become unable to do his/her daily tasks and become unable to work.
People Exposed to Ankle Traumas Are at Risk
First of all, people who are frequently exposed to ankle traumas are in the risk group. People who do some sports and physical activities are also at risk. Dr. Arslan: “We often see compression in the front of the ankle in football players, basketball players, tennis players and dancers who have to bend their ankles excessively. These repetitive minor traumas can cause thickening and subsequent compression of the tissues in front of the ankle, and bone spurs may also form in case of long-term discomfort (irritation). “In this case, the severity of pain and limitation of movement increases,” he said and added: “There may also be compression at the back of the ankle. This condition is often seen in ballerinas and ballet dancers who rise on their tiptoes. Another cause of compression behind the ankle is the presence of an accessory bone called the os trigonum. In such a case, there may be problems in normal physical activities.”
There Are Many Treatment Methods for Ankle Strains
Dr. Arslan: “We recommend medication and rest to reduce edema and irritation in the compression area. It would also be beneficial to make some arrangements regarding the person's work and sports. Another treatment method is physical therapy practices. These methods If it does not provide sufficient relief, we resort to surgical treatment methods. The gold standard in surgical treatment is ankle arthroscopy. In this treatment, small incisions are made in the ankle with a camera and auxiliary tools, the soft tissues that cause compression are cleaned, and any bone protrusions (osteophytes) are shaved off. "Patients can return to their daily work and life after a short rest," he said.
