Root tip (apical) resection is the process of surgically removing the root tip of the teeth or the infection around it. Infection may develop in tooth roots for various reasons, and tooth extraction is not the only treatment option. In this case, root canal treatment is first applied.
In cases where root canal treatment is not sufficient to eliminate the infection, the surgical method applied is root tip resection. Root tip resection is a surgical method applied to the tooth root from the outside in case of non-healing root tip infections.
The alveolar bone in the root tip area is removed and the infection is cleaned. Surgical intervention is completed in an average of 40-60 minutes.
In which cases is root tip resection performed?
-In cases where root canal treatment is insufficient,
-Cysts and infections that occur in the tooth roots and do not go away despite root canal treatment,
-In fractures in the tooth root due to trauma or in the removal of a broken tooth piece,
-During taking a piece from the tooth root for biopsy,
/> -In case of cyst formation on the tooth root,
-In cases where root canal treatment cannot be performed due to structural defect in the tooth root,
-If any tool inside the tooth is broken during the root canal treatment and this broken part needs to be removed,
br /> -Root tip resection is performed in cases where the patient's pain and suffering continues despite root canal treatment.
How is Apical Resection (Root Tip Resection) Operation Performed?
Root tip resection surgery is performed under local anesthesia and takes approximately 40 minutes to 60 minutes. After the anesthesia procedure, the gingival flap is lifted and the bone near the root tip is lifted and opened. The infective tissue at the root tip is removed and the root tip is cut. The surgical area is completely cleaned and made sterile. If neighboring teeth are also affected by the cyst formation, root canal treatment may be required for the affected teeth. In this case, apical resection is performed in the area that will include the adjacent teeth. If large gaps occur in the area where the cyst was removed, the area is filled with bone graft and the treated area is closed with stitches.
