Medicana Bursa Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Op. Dr. Rasim Şerifoğlu said that unconscious sports cause injuries.
Noting that when it comes to "sports injuries", people first think of professional athletes, Şerifoğlu said, "However, when we look at the rate, we see that only 5 percent of those exposed to sports injuries are professional athletes. . "95 percent of those who are exposed to injuries are those who do sports unconsciously," he said.
Şerifoğlu continued his words as follows: He exercises in this way. Some of them are injured in matches played on artificial pitches. Here too, we see the harmful effects of unconscious sports.”
Noting that there are important rules that must be followed before starting sports, Op. Dr. Şerifoğlu said, “First of all, a person needs to know his own body. The body, age group and health status of the person who will do sports should be evaluated by an expert for which sport they are suitable for. Secondly, the person who will do sports must be trained in basic subjects. What kind of pain can occur, especially in which movements are difficult, and how can they be avoided, and what should be the first treatment in case of injury? "A person who will do sports needs to learn this type of information," he said.
Şerifoğlu said, "A person with arthritis in his knee cannot be suddenly told 'you will walk or run'. The patient can start walking thinking that it will be good for him with his own decision. In this case, sports will do more harm than good. Or the patient may not even know that he has arthritis in his knees. It is useful to get examined. "As a result of the examination, swimming may be recommended instead of running for someone with arthritis in their knees," he said.
Op. Dr. Şerifoğlu continued his words as follows:
“I tell some of my patients who come as a result of sports injuries; 'Sports are harmful to health' Of course, they are a little surprised. However, exercise that is not done unconsciously and in accordance with the rules can cause significant harm to our health, let alone benefiting it. We have many patients who injure themselves by saying they will do sports even though they are perfectly healthy. Especially on astroturf pitches... There are also situations like this; Recently, a patient of mine had arthritic knees and was having difficulty walking. He can walk and cannot move his joints, but despite this, he bought a treadmill for his home. Stating that sports injuries occur for two reasons, Şerifoğlu said, "The first is the disorders caused by the person himself, and the other is the bad environmental conditions. Disorders caused by the person are being overweight, or someone with arthritis in their knees is over-exerting that area, or being over-ambitious and putting more pressure on their body than they can handle, thinking they will definitely succeed in this job. "We can give examples of bad environmental factors such as not wearing suitable shoes while playing on an astroturf field and going to the goal without using gloves," he said.
DO NOT NEGLECT THE WARM-UP
“Apart from these We had a match at 19.00. Şerifoğlu said, "There should not be an approach such as 'let's go and start 5 minutes before the match' and added 'Warming up and stretching exercises before sports are very important. If we do not stretch and warm up our muscles sufficiently, direct tearing may occur as a result of sudden movements. Rupture may cause injuries that may lead to surgery. Therefore, the exercises to be done before and after exercise are very important. "The movements made after sports are also aimed at preventing early fatigue," he said.
Stating that the majority of sports injuries consist of simple damages, Şerifoğlu said, "As many as 30 percent may occur that require long-term treatment. It is very important to prevent the damage from progressing. We call this initial treatment. Simply put, in acute cases, it is important to apply ice to that area and elevate and stabilize that area. After these are done, a health institution should be consulted immediately. There are people who get injured on the astroturf field and go to a dislocator and come to us after 10-15 days when their pain does not go away. What we fear most in such situations is vascular injuries or nerve injuries, especially those whose treatment has been delayed, which can mostly occur in cases of excessive tightening or in patients who do not come for control. These can also lead to permanent injuries. A very small percentage of sports injuries require surgery. They should not hesitate to come to the doctor, our aim in follow-up is permanent. "To prevent damage from occurring," he said.
