murmur
murmur is the additional sound heard by the doctor while listening to the heart. Murmurs are heard very frequently in children between the ages of 2-5. The important thing is to evaluate whether these murmurs are innocent or not. A murmur does not mean a hole in the heart.
There are three types of murmur:
- In innocent murmurs there is no structural problem in the heart, the heart is completely normal. The cause of this type of murmur is unknown and disappears over time. The murmur increases in intensity during fever. In these types of murmurs, it is essential to be examined by a pediatric cardiologist and, if necessary, to perform echocardiography to ensure that there is no structural problem. If it is seen that there is no structural heart disease, there is no need for follow-up.
- Functional murmur; These are the murmurs heard in cases of anemia and overactivity of the thyroid gland. In this type of murmur, there is no problem in the heart and the murmur disappears with the treatment of the underlying disease.
- Pathological murmur; Any structural problem in the heart that is present at birth or develops later. are the murmurs heard. In pathological murmurs, there may be serious problems such as a hole in the heart, stenosis or insufficiency in the heart valves, stenosis in the pulmonary vein or carotid artery. For this reason, although an experienced physician can distinguish between pathological and innocent murmurs, it is recommended that every patient with a murmur heard on examination be seen by a pediatric cardiologist.
