Protecting animals is talked about everywhere. Especially when October comes every year, we encounter many written and oral news about the importance of protecting animals. This year, we left behind another 4 October Animal Protection Day. Apart from symbolic events such as discounts offered by markets on cat and dog food, visits by schools to shelters, and a few kennels placed by the municipality specifically for stray animals, do we really feel or comprehend the true meaning and importance of this day? I do not think so. As an animal lover, I feed the poor stray animals trying to live around me. Seeing them running towards me with joy and excitement when they see me makes me both emotional and happy. They are happy with the love and affection given to them rather than the food. They even thank me with their body language. When I enter my own warm and safe home, it gives me peace of mind knowing that even if they don't have a warm home, they will at least sleep under a tree with their bellies full. I know and see dozens of people like me in Aydın. But unfortunately, we are very few in number and not everyone can show the same compassion and dedication. According to them, who cares about the comfort of animals living on the streets when it comes to their own comfort? There are even some who see violence against these defenseless innocent lives as justified. But our people should know this: those who commit violence against animals today will also commit violence against humans tomorrow. Those who do not show compassion to animals have no compassion for humans in their hearts.
Scientific Research Supports
Authorities should investigate and deal with people who commit violence against animals with great seriousness and definitely impose sanctions. They should bring it across. This should be done not only for the safety of animals but also for the safety of people. Sociological and psychological studies show that there is a direct connection between violence against animals and violence against humans. When we look at the history of people who commit violence against people, we come across the fact that they commit violence against animals. It has been determined that students who come to school with guns and commit massacres, which is especially common in America, have committed violence against animals many times in their past. Cruelty to animals is also known as Antisocial Personality Disorder (colloquially called psychopath) in psychology.
The Violent Person Uses Violence
The child who is subjected to violence at home directs his anger towards his parents outside towards stray animals, where he can apply his power. A child who sees his parents being violent towards an animal sees this as his right. He thinks that if his parents do this, then this behavior is feasible and correct. When looking at bilateral relations, it has been determined that the violence between couples is sometimes directed towards the animals living in the house. Couples who are angry with each other use violence against the animal of the individual they are angry with, and are even seen to kill it.
Laws Must Protect Animals and People
The fact that animals need protection is already a fact. It's obvious. But we must do this not only for the sake of animals but also for the sake of people. Because violence against animals is a very strong harbinger of violence against humans. Nowadays, there are changes in the law regarding the punishment of violence against animals. Although greater sanctions have been imposed on those who commit animal cruelty than in the past, there are still no deterrent penalties. The most important thing that law makers need to understand is that there is no difference between violence against animals and violence against humans. A murderer who can do all kinds of evil to a defenseless and innocent being without blinking an eye can easily do the same thing to a defenseless person. As the famous writer George Bernard Shaw said, “I am afraid of people who do not like animals; Because it is not possible for a person who does not have love for animals to love people.”
