Our Psychology and Uncertainty During Quarantine Days

Uncertainty is the feeling of cognitive insecurity experienced due to the unpredictability of the future of an event or situation we are in. Factors such as future concerns, desire to implement life plans, risks and insecurities in the living environment affect the emergence of uncertainty and how we react to uncertainty.

We are in quarantine times. We are experiencing a new normal period in which we stay at home and try to keep up with new developments at every moment. Social media - online revolves around work/school, we don't know how to relax as our comfort zone and the areas where we fulfill our duties and responsibilities are intertwined. Under these conditions, staying psychologically strong and adapting to our current situation is more challenging than ever. This is exactly the situation where uncertainty arises: “instantaneous change and lack of any constant.”

The decrease in individuals' tolerance levels of uncertainty due to quarantine leaves them alone with the problem of anxiety-related stress. Since depression also occurs as the dose of anxiety increases, uncertainty appears to cause a traumatic experience that reduces the quality of life.

We also know from social psychology that the health of our social relationships is possible by gathering under the roof of a group of people to whom we feel we belong and have common views. In situations of uncertainty, people become more dependent on the group they belong to. Especially in these days when we use social media extensively, people's efforts to "make certain" their opinions create a serious conflict. This being the case, the uncertainty that triggers it makes social media toxic and negatively affects our psychology.

As I mentioned before, uncertainty seems bad, but it can have different effects on us depending on our experiences and our positive or negative perspective on life. Because while uncertainty can harm our psychological resilience, it can also create an opportunity and gain our self-esteem. The manifestation of this situation in our lives is closely related to our social reality. Because we know that times of crisis can turn into opportunities. I've been in times like these Reading the environment correctly can form the basis of the future we will build.
