Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: PTSD

When we say psychological trauma, we are talking about events that occur suddenly and turn our lives upside down. These events may occur through natural means such as earthquakes, floods and hurricanes; These may be human-made events such as traffic accidents, fire, war, terrorism, torture, harassment, rape, etc. that occur accidentally or knowingly and purposefully. At the same time, a person may experience failure, humiliation, abandonment or deception as psychological trauma.

PTSD indicates some emotional, intellectual and behavioral problems that occur after a trauma. The person's reactions include extreme fear, helplessness or terror.

PTSD symptoms are grouped into 3 main clusters:

  • Re-experiencing the traumatic event: To the trauma. Even though the event that caused it has disappeared, the reactions to the event do not disappear. It is the state of remembering the traumatic event over and over again, even if involuntarily. This can occur with dreams and nightmares, as well as with daily flashbacks.

  • Avoidance: is the state of avoiding any situation that may remind you of the traumatic event. Feeling the need to get away from situations, places, sounds and people that remind the person of the traumatic event, not remembering the event, decreasing interest and moving away from people are examples of avoidance.

  • A state of hyperarousal:

  • strong> There is a constant state of alertness as if something might happen at any moment. Difficulty falling asleep, difficulty in attention and concentration, startles, and outbursts of anger may occur.

  • For a while after the traumatic event, we see these reactions as 'normal reactions to abnormal situations'. In order for us to call it post-traumatic stress disorder, the symptoms of these three clusters must last for more than 1 month and these symptoms must be of a quality that disrupts the person's daily functionality. Sometimes we observe that these symptoms last for months or even years.

There may be some obstacles for people experiencing PTSD to seek treatment. These are: hesitancy to seek help for recovery, hopelessness, avoidance of remembering the event, loss of trust in people, or not seeing these symptoms as this disease and thinking that they are caused by the person's weakness. As is believed…

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a serious disease that causes problems in various areas that affect the person's life, social activities, and perception of the world. However, it is known that various treatment methods are quite successful in the treatment of this disease.

Considering that not every person is affected by a traumatic event to the same extent, a treatment plan that suits the person's needs must be prepared.
