Increasing food consumption today is not only about the need for energy and nutrients, but also about the pleasure taken from food.
-
Hedonism states that the meaning of life is in pleasure and pleasure. It belongs to the philosophy that claims it.
HOMEOSTATIC HUNGER and HEDONIC HUNGER
-
Homeostatic hunger; It is a state of hunger that occurs as a result of biological energy needs. Hormones in the body give signals when energy stores decrease.
-
To explain hedonic hunger with an example; Hedonic hunger is defined as hedonic hunger when a person who has finished dinner and left the table is asked whether he wants his favorite dessert or not and responds positively even though he is full.
-
Hedonic hunger prevents homeostatic hunger when there is excess energy in the body.

According to research, even seeing sweet and fatty foods is enough to activate the brain's reward mechanism. As soon as these foods touch the tongue, taste receptors send signals to various parts of the brain. Delicious foods often cause the brain to become saturated with the dopamine hormone and lose sensitivity. As a result, overeaters begin to require more sweet and fatty foods to reach the pleasure threshold in their brains. (NOTE: Dopamine hormone is involved in functions such as movement, memory, pleasurable reward and behavior in the body.)
-
When the taste thresholds of obese and normal weight people are investigated, it is seen that the fat ones are of normal weight. It has been found that they have higher taste thresholds than those who do not.
-
Under normal conditions, leptin and insulin hormones cause the release of dopamine hormone to be suppressed and the feeling of pleasure during the meal to decrease. However, studies conducted on mice show that as the amount of fat tissue increases, the brain becomes unresponsive to these hormones.
SO WHAT TO DO?
Some researchers argue that self-control can be taught by focusing on approaches that create behavioral change. To recreate the nutritional environment, to prevent fatty/overly sweet foods from being brought into the house, and to avoid environments where such foods are served for a certain period of time. It is better to stay away.
