Do People with Allergic Diseases Know How to Grow Plants at Home?

Especially in the last 20 years, the use of ornamental plants in homes and workplaces has increased. Most people are exposed to indoor plants. Allergic sensitivity to indoor plants was first described in 1985 with the Benjamin plant.

In ornamental plants, allergens are found in the sap of the plant and pass to the leaves with water and from there to the dust particles on the leaves. When they mix with the air, they are taken into the body through the respiratory tract.

Are ornamental plants important for individuals with an allergic nature?

In the research conducted, skin tests performed after indoor plant exposure in individuals without allergic diseases did not show allergy, while allergic reactions were not detected. Approximately 80% of patients with cold have been found to develop allergic sensitivity to indoor plants in skin testing. It has been observed that individuals with allergic rhinitis develop allergies to these plants over time, especially when they have ficus benjamina, yucca, ivy, palm tree and geranium plants in their homes. In Turkey, especially the Benjamin plant and yucca are frequently grown in homes.

In another study on the development of allergic sensitivity to ornamental plants, skin tests were performed with 15 types of ornamental plants on 150 patients diagnosed with allergic rhinitis and/or asthma. It has been determined that the risk of developing allergy to ornamental plants is high in patients with atopy (a doctor-diagnosed allergic disease in the family) and food allergies. Those who have allergic rhinitis and grow ornamental plants have an increased risk of developing allergies to ornamental plants over time. Yucca plant (yucca elephantipes), dieffenbachia (Dieffenbachia picta) and poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) were found to be the plants that cause the most allergic sensitization. If African violet (Saintpaulia ionantha), croton, pelargonium, and yucca plant (yucca elephantipes) are found in the house, there is a high risk of developing sensitivity to these plants.

In summary, people with allergic sensitivities should keep yucca and Benjamin plants in their homes. including ivy, palm tree, cranberry, diphthong, poinsettia, croton, and geranium may cause sensitivity to these plants through exposure over time.
