Hernia; It is the protrusion of one of the internal organs from a weak area of the abdomen. They are often seen in the abdomen and are most commonly seen in the groin. Inguinal hernia is 25 times more common in men than in women. Abdominal hernias can be examined under three main headings: Inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia and surgical site hernia. A hernia manifests itself as pain and swelling under the skin. A hernia may occur due to factors that cause increased intra-abdominal pressure, such as strong coughing, straining, heavy lifting, and the weakening of the abdominal muscles with age. Let's briefly examine hernias under 3 main headings. - Inguinal hernia: In men, a natural weakness occurs when the spermatic cord descends from the abdomen to the scrotum in embryological life, that is, in the migration path, and for this reason, inguinal hernia is 25 times more common in men. In women, an inguinal hernia may occur in the internal ring where the ligamentum rotundum passes through the suspensory ligaments of the uterus. Inguinal hernias are further divided into two subgroups: direct and indirect. Indirect hernia is a hernia that passes through the spermatic cord, while direct hernia is a hernia that occurs as a result of the weakness of the gasia at the back of the cord. In addition to these, there are also rarer types of inguinal hernias called femoral hernia and spiegel hernia. Regardless of the type of hernia, its treatment is surgery. The surgery can be performed open or closed. -umbilical hernia: The place where the umbilical cord comes out closes shortly after birth, but since this area is weaker than other parts of the abdomen, the reasons I mentioned before, namely strain, heavy lifting, etc. A hernia may occur from here. Umbilical hernias may occur during pregnancy because intra-abdominal pressure increases during pregnancy. While this problem can be solved with simple methods such as tying money in newborns, the treatment for adults is surgery. -Surgical site hernias: They occur when the lower stitches, that is, the layer we call peritoneal fascia, are opened directly under the previous surgery site. It is manifested by swelling and pain right under the surgery site and can grow rapidly. The treatment is again surgery. Apart from all these, lumbar disc herniation, that is, herniated disc, and cervical disc herniation, that is, cervical herniation, are other types of hernia, and these issues are of interest to neurosurgeons and will be discussed in detail here. act. Treatment of abdominal hernias should not be delayed. Avoiding surgery can lead to some major problems. The most common of these is a strangulated hernia. What does a strangulated hernia mean? Hernias occur within the hernial sac and the hernial canal forms a narrow neck as it passes through the abdominal membrane. In this narrow neck, the intestines can sometimes become compressed and neurosis may develop. In this case, very severe abdominal pain and vomiting may also accompany the picture. If this trapped intestine has undergone necrosis during the surgery, it must be excised. A simple hernia now turns into an intestinal surgery. Apart from this, if delayed hernias descend into the scrotum, that is, the bags, in men, they can negatively affect testicular functions and perhaps even lead to infertility. That's why I recommend hernia patients to consult a physician without delay and not to hesitate about surgery.
