With the development of technology in recent years, internet use has become part of every aspect of our lives. We now meet most of our needs over the web.
In these days when we have to stay at home due to the pandemic, we compulsively use the internet to meet our needs; In fact, we somehow adapt to the process.
In this process, the psychology community, like other sectors, is experiencing new formations. Online therapies are on our agenda, which some psychologists oppose, some approach with caution, and some use because they already find them functional.
Online therapy is actually something that I have not used often before, that I approach with caution, and that I have experienced several times with my clients who had to move or change cities.
While it is a method that has been used in the world for years, it has been in our country for a long time. It is also used. During the pandemic, we all had to quickly switch to online therapy and experienced that we could use it functionally. We saw that the relationship we established in a healthy way, by maintaining professional ethics and framework, was good for our clients and we continued to support them in this way. It seems that face-to-face meetings will be replaced by online therapy for a while.
What is Online Therapy?
It is a type of meeting between the therapist and the client over the internet, in a virtual environment.
There is no change in ethical principles and quality in this type of interview. The security principle, confidentiality principle, limits and rights are valid for both the client and the therapist.
To Whom Can It Apply?
Although there are some differences between them in terms of application, online therapies are used for children, Everyone, adolescent, adult, family, couple can benefit. In order to protect both ourselves and our clients; It is not recommended to be applied to people who have severe depression, intense suicidal thoughts, severe concentration problems, or alcohol and substance abuse.
Which Therapy Schools Can Be Worked With?
Although mainly cognitive-based therapy types can be applied, other types of therapy can also be applied. The most striking of these is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy. It can be applied as a needle.
A few weeks ago, we, as EMDR therapists, even received online training on this subject within the EMDR Association. In a short time, we saw that we can use online (EMDR) therapy functionally even with children.
The Power of a Safe Relationship
As psychotherapists, we see that what really heals human beings is a safe relationship. That's why the function of the therapy is healing rather than its type. And the client-therapist relationship is a healthy type of relationship. While going through a challenging period, what we need most is a sense of security and a safe relationship. In addition, not breaking the routine is an important protector that supports mental health. That's why you can safely contact online support.
We are trying to adapt to the process meticulously, taking into account professional ethics, and we continue to support our clients on the online platform.
We hope to be able to meet face to face on safe days when distances are eliminated. ,
