Heart Spasm

Heart spasm is a disorder that occurs as a result of the heart not being fed enough blood due to contraction of the artery feeding the heart tissue. This disease, which is mostly seen in men, occurs as pressure and burning in the middle of the chest. It mostly occurs during physical activity or due to stress. Heart spasm lasts between 5 and 10 minutes. If it lasts longer than this period, this may be a sign of a heart attack.

When the narrowing of the coronary arteries is excessive, heart spasm may be felt even during rest. The pain radiates from under the breastbone to the jaw, shoulders, neck and left arm. Pain can be described as pressure and squeezing. It also causes symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness and nausea.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Heart Spasm

In case of suspicion of heart spasm, it is necessary to consult a cardiologist and perform the necessary examinations. Treatment is provided with medications or angiogram, angiolapsy and surgery to treat diseases that cause spasm.

Patients experiencing heart spasms are advised to quit smoking immediately if they smoke. They need to pay attention to their nutrition along with non-dangerous exercises that will improve their quality of life. It is recommended that they maintain a healthy weight by avoiding very fatty and very salty foods. They should also stay away from stressful environments and situations, along with eating plenty of vegetables and fruits.
