What is Prominent Ear and How is it Treated?

Situations where the angle between the ear and the head is wider than normal are referred to as 'protruding ears'. In some cases, the folds on the upper part of the ear do not develop sufficiently and the ear has a flat appearance. In these two cases, it can be corrected with prominent ear aesthetics because it is disturbing in terms of appearance.

WHEN IS PROMINENT EAR AESTHETICS PERFORMED?

Aesthetic surgeries can be performed if there is a problem that affects the person's quality of life and is important for the functions of the organs. If they do not have any effect, they are performed after waiting for the person's development to be completed.

Age limits may change in cases of congenital abnormalities and trauma-related problems. However, unlike other plastic surgeries, it is recommended that prominent ear aesthetics be performed before starting primary school.
In order for the child not to be bullied by his friends, not to feel different, and to prevent his social development from being negatively affected, the ears that have completed their development can be intervened at an early age. Since ear development is completed at the age of 6, there is no harm in performing this operation at an early age.

HOW IS PROMINENT EAR AESTHETICS DONE?

Although prominent ear aesthetics is an operation that can be performed under local anesthesia, it can be performed at a young age. Sometimes general anesthesia may be preferred. The operation takes approximately 2 hours. In prominent ear aesthetics, stitches are placed between the base of the ear and the skull and the angle of the ear is narrowed. Sutures are also used to create the folds on the upper part of the ear. In some patients, while the angle of the auricle is corrected, the angle of the earlobe is not. Since this will not create a pleasant appearance, the angle is adjusted with an incision made behind the earlobe. After prominent ear surgery, if surgery was performed under local anesthesia, the person is discharged on the same day. In surgeries performed under general anesthesia, it is recommended that the person stay under surveillance for one day.

It is possible to take a shower on the 3rd day after the operation. Desk workers can rest for a day after the operation and do their daily work. It is recommended for those who work in heavier jobs to rest for up to 3 days. For children, it would be correct to choose a rest period in which the child feels comfortable.
