Why do people resort to violence?

What surprised me when I researched the nature and psychological factors of violence was that aggression and violent tendencies were disguised as 'justification'. Even people who commit serious crimes such as murder and violent acts can find reasons to legitimize themselves. I see their justification as being that they resorted to violence to defend themselves. If both the perpetrator of violence and the victim of violence are in the role of victims, where are those 'bad' people?

According to Freud, all human behavior, including aggression, arises from the complex relationship and tension between eros and thanatos. If the death instinct is not restrained, it will result in the person destroying himself. For this reason, people resort to different defense mechanisms in order to restrict the death instinct; With these defense mechanisms, for example, displacement defense, this energy is transferred outside and thus aggression occurs. In other words, the person shows aggressive tendencies in order to suppress the death instinct. From Freud's perspective, aggression primarily results from the directing of the death instinct to destroy oneself towards other people[I]. If people use violence as a defense mechanism, a question arises in my mind: Where is the distinction between animals and humans? Assuming that animals show aggressive tendencies in order to survive in the wild, why do humans resort to violence even though they have the ability to think and speak?

It is thought that aggressive behavior and maltreatment encountered in the early period affects the individual through the following mechanisms and makes him prone to aggression in the future:

p>

1- The environment becomes a bad model for the child by showing violence.

2-    Through reinforcement, aggressive behavior becomes established in the child and turns into a personality trait. For example: boys' use of toy guns, families' approval of hitting behavior by telling a child who hits his peer, 'Shoot him, son', instills aggressive behavior in the child through reinforcement.

3-    Neuroanatomical factors that may lead to impulsivity and aggressive behavior in the future due to head trauma. Damages occur

4-    It causes the child to perceive reality distortedly by creating a belief that the environment is dangerous (the message given to the child here is that the environment is dangerous and protect yourself by acting aggressively in the situation that causes you distress! Therefore, removing the child from the environment It is very important to socialize people, not words).

5-    The habit of expressing emotions through actions, not words, is acquired[II].

TYPES OF VIOLENCE

When it comes to violence, it includes not only physical violence, but also emotional, economic and sexual violence. There is no violence, no matter how big or small. As a society, our tolerance for violence should be zero.

CYCLE OF VIOLENCE

I believe that the individual's self-expression has a healing power. The boss who cannot express himself becomes angry with his employer, the spouse who cannot express himself becomes angry with his wife at home in the evening, the spouse who cannot express himself becomes angry with his child, and the child meets the feeling of anger at an early age and the grounds for aggression are laid. As you can see, as the vicious circle continues in this way, it becomes difficult to prevent aggression and violence training. As a society, we must start healing from within our homes. In this case, it becomes inevitable to notice vicious cycles and get help.

SOCIAL PERSONS INCREASING VIOLENCE

KAMER shares the following survey in the report of the "Women's Rights are Human Rights" project published in 2015. When asked to mothers how they solved the problems they had with their children, approximately one-fourth of the mothers (24.5%) stated that they "threatened to complain to the child's father" and approximately one-fourth (26.4%) stated that "they sometimes beat or punished the child" (KAMER, 2015). We must start healing from inside homes.

WHY IS IT OBJECTIVE TO SHARING VIOLENCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

Research shows that young men who are convicted of crimes such as murder, rape, assault and harassment are an important part of the population. It shows that most of them (22-34%) imitate the (violence and) criminal techniques they watch on television. (critical media literacy-p182) In the long run, social l norms are shifting towards violence, and especially children are starting to see violence as a way to solve problems [III].

In the 167-page thesis prepared by an RTÜK expert, a "black list" consisting of films containing violence and encouraging young people to violence was presented. …Accordingly, among the foreign films, the movie named "Killer Born" was at the top of the list. Valley of the Wolves took the first place among local productions on the list. In the list, which also includes cartoons, the main famous cartoons that are emphasized as "encouraging violence" are listed as "Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, Batman, He-Man, Pokemon" [IV]ı.

Violence, harassment, I think that sharing incidents such as rape on social media increases these incidents. The occurrence, details and fears of these events settle in the human mind, and the human mind is loyal to fear. He also learns fear. In the phase where people try to escape and avoid fear, it may cause some problems and increase their susceptibility to crime. Even though violence, harassment and rape are against a person's moral values, how violence, harassment and rape are done is learned through social media and causes trauma. I feel like I hear the voice of your human values and sensitive sides. Let's let the 'judiciary' decide what the punishment should be. Our tolerance for violence against women, children, people and living creatures should be zero. I invite you all to start healing from within our homes. Best regards
