When walking, getting up from a chair, or swimming, you may feel a jumping or tripping sensation on the side of your hip. Although this sensation can sometimes be uncomfortable, it is usually painless and harmless. It is often seen in young athletes and dancers.
Cause
It is seen as a result of a muscle or tendon jumping over a protruding bone and being displaced. It is common in the hip when the structure called the iliotibial band jumps over the bone called the trochanter major.
When the hip is straight and standing, the iliotibial band is located behind the trochanter. When the hips bend, the band rubs and skips forward. This condition can lead to hip inflammation and trochanteric bursitis over time.
Diagnosis
Many patients do not come to the doctor unless it causes pain. However, the doctor will make your diagnosis by questioning the location of your pain, its mechanism of occurrence, and what type of activity it occurs with. Clinical diagnosis is not difficult.
X-rays are usually normal. However, it can be used for differential diagnosis.
Treatment
If snapping is not painful, there is no need for treatment.
If there is no pain and it bothers you, you can do the following at home;
- Reduce activity and apply ice
- Use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and avoid uncomfortable positions
- Modify your exercise and sports activities. For example, you can reduce swimming and cycling.
- If you do not benefit from the above conservative treatment and experience pain, consult a physician.
- Stretching exercises can be given.
- If bursitis has developed, local injection. Treatment may be recommended.
- If the problem persists despite everything, iliotibial band release surgery is planned.
