Children, youth and adults need the support of caregivers in times of uncertainty as we currently face the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Coping with school closures, sudden changes in routines, loss of connection with teachers and friends, and fear of contracting the virus is a burden on everyone, and parents play an important role in helping children, teens, and adults understand the changes and process their associated emotions. Individuals with autism may need additional support to process information and adapt to many changes. This population may face additional challenges with comprehension, communication, difficulty understanding abstract language, insistence on routines, and a greater likelihood of anxiety and depression – all of which may be exacerbated during this stressful time.
The following 7 supports strategy is designed to meet the needs of individuals with autism during this time of uncertainty. Additionally, examples and ready-made resources are included to help parents implement these strategies quickly and easily. These materials intentionally represent a variety of styles/designs/complexity to model the range that would make the most sense across ages and abilities and to demonstrate what parents can produce with a small number of materials. Special adaptations and additions may be necessary to best meet the diverse needs of individual children and young adults.
These strategies are intended to suggest a few ideas that may be helpful – parents can take one idea at a time and find a way for children with autism and their families to They can find it. Parents may want to start with a strategy they have used in the past, or perhaps find a strategy to address the most pressing stressor. Consider involving the individual with autism in the decision-making process about which strategy would be most helpful.
