The word confabulation is of Latin origin and derives from the word fabulari. Its meaning is to chat, to talk about small things. It has entered our Turkish language as tales. You know those Fables by La Fontaine? Do you remember that? La Fontaine's tales, that is. He entered psychiatry in 1889. Russian neuropsychiatrist Sergei Korsakoff witnessed patients suffering from memory loss due to heavy alcohol use tell very interesting things. As you know, patients were shaking from their abundant purses! He called this situation confabulation, that is, fairy tale telling. Later, it was understood that this situation arose for other reasons as well. Causes such as Alzheimer's, head trauma, brain tumor, infection and anterior communicating artery rupture negatively affect our memory and cause fables.
A few examples explain the subject better:
A 25-year-old traffic police officer. As a result of the accident, he stays in intensive care for 4 days and when he wakes up, he explains that he is from the secret service and had an accident while he was on an operation with the CIA.
The 61-year-old patient has 4 children (ages 27, 31, 32 and 34) but says that he has been married for 4 months. Well, when asked what these children are, he says, "I guess I adopted him!" He wants (he doesn't have such a meeting). Thank God, most of the time this problem does not last long and the patients recover.
Everything I have explained so far was explainable. The bomb is coming now. Let me introduce you to a world map made in 1459 and be careful, most of the places are made up!
You may say that the person who drew this had a brain tumor, but that is not the case. Even places that had not been discovered back then were depicted and no space was left empty. This continued until 1525, until the Salviati World Map was drawn.
When sick people made up fairy tales about their lives, they affected at most one person, themselves. Hey friend, what is it to make up a continent/island? Do you draw a map because you think an island would look great here? It's ironic, but it is.
Human nature does not tolerate a vacuum. To put it simply, Salviati's empty map sparked such curiosity that people have been making discoveries for hundreds of years to fill those gaps. He made an effort. In other words, the unknown triggers curiosity and makes you miss comfort. We feel obliged to answer everything we cannot fill.
We will always have gaps and unknowns. The important thing is not to fill these gaps in a very fantastic way, but to stick to reality as much as possible.
May you have many beautiful tales that are close to reality.
