One of the most difficult issues for parents today is to raise responsible children. Adults' rush in daily life and the need to complete current tasks quickly can cause them to be more impatient with their children and to do the activities that children need to learn through experience, instead of the child. As a result of this approach of parents, the child's ability to start and continue a job is negatively affected. The child has difficulty in taking responsibility, developing feelings of self-confidence and autonomy. For this reason, the awareness of responsibility that begins to be gained at an early age is very important for the development of the individual.
The attitudes and behaviors of each family may differ regarding giving responsibility to the child. So, how should parents follow while teaching their children a sense of responsibility?
Although parents may complain about their children not taking responsibility, studying and doing homework are not the only responsibilities of school-age children in our education system focused on academic success. Apart from the child's academic skills, the child should be given responsibilities appropriate to his age and developmental period, and it should be checked whether the responsibilities are fulfilled.
In cases where he does not fulfill his responsibilities, the child should know that he is responsible. After a responsibility is not fulfilled, the child should be talked to in a constructive way, without condemning or shaming.
Taking responsibility for the child's behavior and doing it on his behalf will prevent the child from gaining responsibility awareness.
In situations where the child needs to take responsibility, orders Communication should be made without using the tense. Saying sentences such as 'Can you help me?' 'I need your support/help on this matter.' will be effective both in establishing healthy communication within the family and in helping the child fulfill his responsibilities.
Participating the child in activities appropriate to his age and interests, Preparing the necessary materials for the activity by the child will be beneficial in developing awareness of responsibility.
The child should be made aware of keeping his/her own areas at home clean and performing self-care skills, and parents should be a good role model in this process.
