Do Every Thyroid Nodule Require a Biopsy?

Although the principles in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease, popularly known as goiter, are very simple, unfortunately, it is an issue open to abuse in private practice. I think there are too many unnecessary operations and even unnecessary biopsies. At least 8-9 out of 10 thyroid biopsies and surgeries I have observed are unnecessary. But unfortunately, as it has become a habit and responsibility is avoided, biopsies are required for almost all nodules seen on thyroid ultrasonography, and most of them undergo unnecessary surgery. If you take a look at the patients around you who have had thyroid surgery, you will understand what I mean.

To avoid unnecessary operations and biopsies, an opinion should be obtained from a second or third doctor and a radiologist experienced in thyroid ultrasound should be consulted. The issue of an experienced radiologist is important because the radiologist can most likely understand whether the nodules seen in a well-performed thyroid ultrasound are benign or malignant. Especially in patients with many nodules, an experienced radiologist can find the suspicious nodule and understand which one to pinpoint. That's why you should research your doctors, both clinicians and radiologists. Since we work with experienced thyroid radiologists, we cancel the surgery and even biopsies of 90% of the patients who come to us and are recommended for surgery.
