We have recently been experiencing an epidemic that we do not yet know how long it will last. A pandemic is a disease that has spread throughout the world. I'm sure you know where you can get really reliable information about combating this epidemic. My suggestion; You should also consult the Ministry of Health, members of the scientific committee, a number of scientists you have trusted before, and different foreign sources.
These times we are living in are not familiar times. Completely extraordinary times and circumstances. For this reason, we will need to acquire some new attitudes and behaviors other than our normal attitudes and behaviors. Not being able to go out whenever we want, not being able to walk around, not being able to go to the park or cafe, not being able to shake hands, not being able to hug and kiss when we meet. Over the past days, we have slowly started to adapt and most of these have started to be done.
Many people's plans for the future, their dreams, organizations, plans to meet their loved ones, etc. had to be postponed until an indefinite date. At this stage, we realize that the most troubling part is that the future is uncertain. Yes, when will everything go back to normal? We don't know the answer to that. This uncertainty in itself is a problematic element in terms of mental health. First of all, it would be useful to accept this fact. We will think like this, this is an uncertain new situation and what should I do and how should I behave. Here, the human ability to adapt, that is, to get used to new situations and to survive in those conditions, emerges, which comes from being human.
So how does this adaptation process occur more quickly and smoothly? First of all, uncertainty and extraordinary new conditions create a feeling of fear in people. The feeling of fear is one of the basic emotions that keeps people alive. Being afraid is good, it keeps us alive. Fear makes us take precautions, which keeps us alive. So what happens when fear increases and becomes uncontrollable? Intense anxiety and even panic symptoms may be shown.
If we take into account the recommendations of experts and act accordingly, the feeling of fear will have done its job and will fade away. But if we still feel fear, it has now turned into the feeling we call anxiety. To eliminate this;
To satisfy the need for information, that is, eat it two or three times a day Looking at the news to see if there is any information,
Taking responsibility, that is, sharing work at home in shopping, cleaning, hygiene practices, etc., volunteering activities, making masks, participating in applause activities, etc. Making contributions,
It will be enough to adapt to this new situation and remain courageous by taking the risk of changing.
Some psychological disorders may be triggered during such extraordinary periods. The most common groups are anxiety disorders and depression. Examples of anxiety disorders include panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorder. In these two disorders, typical fear reactions are experienced intensely in the body. Symptoms such as tremors in hands, voice and body, sweating, rapid heartbeat, chest tightness, frequent urination and dizziness may be observed. These symptoms can be relieved quickly if the three items above are followed, or they can be eliminated by doing things that make the person feel safe, which has been known to relieve them in similar situations before.
Another frequently triggered depression; It manifests itself with symptoms such as not being able to enjoy anything, a sad facial expression, feeling weak and unable to lift one's hands, sleeping all the time or not being able to sleep at all, having a huge appetite or loss of appetite, and losing the meaning of everything.
Of course, it is understandable that people feel helpless in the face of such a disease that affects the whole world and whose cure has not yet been found. On the other hand, as we become more informed, 98% of people who contract the disease are not harmed. Ways of protection and ways to stop contamination are known. Knowing how to protect ourselves and our loved ones no matter what we do, and taking responsibility and doing these things will protect us from depression and reduce our anxiety to the optimum level, allowing us to be aggressive and energetic.
Remember, humans are one of the most adaptable species in nature. and he succeeds.
Stay at home, take responsibility, be active at home.
