Hacettepe University (HU) Faculty of Medicine, Department of Child Health and Diseases, Infectious Diseases Department Lecturer Prof. Dr. Ateş Kara also stated that vaccination is one of the most important and proven ways to protect public health, after providing clean water.
Generally speaking, Kara pointed out that 3 million child deaths are prevented every year with vaccination practices, and said, "Vaccination "Thanks to this, smallpox has been eliminated, while polio has reached the point of elimination in many parts of the world, including our country. As a result of vaccination, measles, diphtheria and tetanus are now very rare in many parts of the world." he said.
Prof. Dr. Regarding the mercury debate in vaccines, Kara said that thimerosal or thiomersal, chemically known as sodium ethyl-mercury thiosalicylate, is an organic substance containing 49.6 percent of its weight in mercury. Reminding that it has been used in very small amounts as a preservative in vaccines since the 1930s, Kara continued his words as follows: It has begun to be discussed that mercury may be toxic. However, there is no evidence or data showing that such low amounts of mercury in vaccines are toxic. Today, there is no scientific data showing that vaccines containing thiomersal have a negative effect on children's health. In addition, ethyl mercury is present for about a week.
When evaluated numerically, even when a six-dose vaccine containing thiomersal is administered in its entirety, the maximum amount of mercury that can be taken is 200 μg, even in a four-month-old child, this amount reaches 3.2 μg/kg weekly intake. This amount is below the WHO limit of 3.3 μg/kg weekly intake. In the studies and monitoring conducted on vaccine safety in the USA, no relationship was found between the use of thiomersal-containing vaccines, developmental disorders, autism and thiomersal use. In Northern European studies, thio It has been conclusively shown that there is no relationship between mersal and central nervous system developmental diseases or autism."
