In this article, we wanted to inform our patients with shoulder pain, which constitute a significant portion of our patients.
If we look at its anatomy, the shoulder joint, one of the two largest joints of the body, is interconnected and stable with many muscles and ligaments.
Although there are many causes of shoulder pain, the most common causes are trauma in young people, impingement in the shoulder in older ages, and tearing of the muscles surrounding the shoulder (rotator cuff).
Subacromial impingement shoulder pain. It is the most common cause. Shoulder impingement, which occurs when the arm is raised above the head level, such as reaching and wiping glass, occurs when the tendons in the shoulder area get stuck between the bone structures in this area.
Another cause is Rotator cuff. ) tear occurs in the muscles surrounding the shoulder joint and shoulder movements become very painful and restricted. Symptoms of the disorder include repetitive, constant and night pain in overhead shoulder movements, weakness and limitation in shoulder movements.
The causes include repetitive overhead shoulder movements. While there are factors such as movements and excessive force, age-related degeneration may cause tearing without any reason.
Although the anamnesis you give to your doctor and the doctor's first examination are the most important steps in diagnosis, MRI is used in definitive diagnosis as well as direct radiography and ultrasound. .
In the treatment of our patients, resting the shoulder joint and using NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are priorities. Physiotherapy and intra-shoulder steroid injection help treat non-advanced cases.
However, surgery should be considered in advanced cases where complaints do not improve despite all these treatments.
There are three alternatives to surgery: open, mini-open and arthroscopy.
