Being Good Enough

The main concern of parents, especially mothers, who are preparing to give birth, who have just given birth and who are raising their babies, is related to whether they can offer the "perfect" thing for their children during this period. However, both mothers and fathers are good mothers and fathers in their own right. With the concept of "GoodEnoughMother" in 1949, Winnicott talks about mothers who can show "temporary" deficiencies that are "tolerable" to the baby. Holding, one of the maternal functions, is the mother's protection and support of the baby. The newborn baby is not in a position to organize itself. For this reason, it is important for the mother to "hold" the baby in order to determine the baby's space. Another important maternal function is handling. The mother establishes physical contact with the baby and makes the baby feel safe. Besides these, the mother has a mirror role. When the baby looks at its mother, it sees itself. If the baby's face wrinkles, the mother's face wrinkles too. If the baby's face smiles, the mother's face also smiles. How the baby looks when he looks at his mother's face depends on what he sees there. The mother reflects herself to the baby. When the mother cannot reflect, the child becomes restless, overactive and aggressive so that the mother's attention can be directed to the child. At the same time, Winnicott emphasizes that the mother must first identify with her baby in order to care for her baby. Pregnancy is the best rehearsal period for this process. In this way, the mother will be able to understand what her baby needs and why her baby is crying. The mother, who can perceive her baby's concerns and desires, offers appropriate objects to meet the baby's needs. In this way, the baby first experiences the experience of "omnipotence", which is "everything I want comes true when I want it", and then, as the mother begins to make the baby experience deprivations that it can "bear", the baby begins to turn from omnipotence to reality and meets the fact that all his wishes and needs may not be met at that very moment, and he turns from omnipotence. The process of giving up begins... The "father" saves the mother from the addiction of the relationship between the mother and the baby...
