Obesity is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by excess fat accumulation in the body with an increase in the number or size of fat cells, which is widespread worldwide and causes serious health problems. Obesity is responsible for 2.8 million deaths worldwide.
Obesity is defined by the World Health Organization as excess fat storage in the body that is associated with health risks. These accumulated excess fats have some negative effects on our metabolism. Our fat tissue acts like an endocrine organ in the body and secretes some chemicals that create an inflammatory response. Obesity can be the cause of your migraine attacks, especially diseases such as insulin resistance, hormone disorders, cholesterol, heart diseases, oxidative stress, inflammation.
Obesity is classified by BMI (Body Mass Index). BMI result is obtained by dividing your weight to the square of your height.
However, BMI only gives us a clue about our degree of obesity. Because our body mass index does not give us precise information about our body composition. What is important for us is our body fat-muscle ratio. At this point, parameters such as detailed body analysis, waist/hip ratio, your age, gender, and biochemical findings should also be taken into consideration.
Studies show that most individuals with normal body mass index and weight have high fat content. This condition is DEFINED AS HIDDEN OBESITY. In other words, even if you have a weight within your ideal range, if your body fat ratio is high, you are called hidden obese.
The ideal body fat ratio in men should be approximately 15% and in women it should be around 20-22%.
Hidden obesity, which is a condition we frequently encounter in clinics, carries the same health risks as obesity. In fact, it can be even more dangerous because it cannot be detected directly, like obesity. The fat accumulated around the organs causes the organs to lose their function, thus creating a risk for diseases.
Improper diet, excessive carbohydrate intake, inactivity and some slimming products can be the causes of hidden obesity. Products used to lose weight quickly cause muscle and water loss, while affecting our fat amount. It does not cause a decrease in weight.
Our aim here should be to reach our ideal fat-muscle ratio by eating a balanced, adequate and healthy diet, and to protect our general health and spiritual well-being, rather than a weight-based calorie restriction approach.
