Diarrhea caused by adenoviruses is most common in 1-2 years of age. Adenovirus group F serotypes 40-41 cause diarrhea.

It causes epidemics in nurseries, schools and camps. Although this infection occurs throughout the year, it is most common between May and July.

The virus is transmitted through the fecal - oral route or droplets.

The virus is found in infected waste and remains alive for a long time. . Transmission also occurs in this way. Since adenoviruses are resistant to many disinfectants, they cannot be easily cleaned from their environment.

Clinical findings of the disease

Adenoviruses can cause diarrhea together with other viruses. The most common coexistence of adenovirus and rotavirus is seen.

In recent years, with the introduction of rotavirus vaccines, rotavirus diarrhea has decreased. There is an increase in the incidence of adenovirus diarrhea.

10-13% of childhood diarrhea is due to adenoviruses and the clinical picture is severe, unlike other diarrheas.

Treatment:  

It is the replacement of lost fluids and electrolytes.

Adequate nutrition of babies and children should be ensured.
